Ravi doesnt make the team purely as a bowler, Vettori doesn't purely as a batsman.

Last true allrounder was Flintoff. Kallis too, since i think Kallis could've made it as purely the third seamer, though not all the time throughout his career. IMO, he could've been the third seamer on merit alone in the Donald-Pollock era, after Fanie retired and before Ntini's rise, then after Donald & Pollock retired.

Agree with @Muloghonto

To put Ashwin ATG allrounders is an overstatement. KD has knocks in test cricket where he comes when team is 5 down with a low score and scored a 100 even in 92 in SA. I don't think Ashwin has that reputation with batting. In today's match contest, KD would have scored handily even against quality bowling. I don't think Ashwin has attained that stature.

He has to score overseas but then Kapil did not score a lot of centuries either. If Ashwin can score few gritty knocks overseas he can be considered as good. Ashwin in his short career has already achieved a lot with both bat and ball.

 

Hence I am saying he will be joining his league and not suprassing him. I am not even saying that he will surpass or anything as I don't like comparing players from different eras and especially when both are different bowlers

Its not so much overseas, its against quality opposition. He already has 2 overseas centuries but against crappy WI.

For Ashwin to lay claim to being a legitimate batting threat, he needs to score centuries against one of RSA/AUS/ENG/NZ or maybe on a minefield against SL- rest of the bowling lineups are too weak. 

But for him to do that, he needs to bat atleast at #7 and have a decent tail-ender or two - like Jadeja/Bhuvi/Jayant to keep him company.

 

Otherwise, i don't see how he is going to score a ton coming in at #8 or 9, with people who can't face more than 20 balls to keep him company.

They're all fast bowlers. Usually you talk of strike rate when discussing pacers and average wrt to spinners.  Ashwin's strike rate can be compared to pacers at the moment
