Aussies: 7-1 Toss and 1-6 Results

After hearing all the noise coming from Aussie fans and media about how toss is so "crucial" in India and how you have to win the toss to win, here's the newsflash... Over the last 2 Aussie tours to India, Aussies have won the toss 7 out of 8 innings! And as for results, they are 1-6 and probably should've been 1-7 if not for a mini-miracle at Ranchi. So much for "win the toss, win the match" theory  

 

And if you look at our home season and look at the home series we played against SA, NZ, Eng and Aus, here's the overall situation with respect to toss :-

 

Total Matches (SA - 4, NZ - 3, Eng - 5, Aus - 4): 16, No. of Tosses won by opponents: 8, Results: 1-12

 

Thus despite winning 8 tosses, the away teams could barely win 1 Test and overall India won 12 Tests and 1 test was disrupted by rain (against SA in B'lore) which India was dominating before being washed away. So this pretty much rubbishes the theory of "win toss and win the match". Fact is you have to play well to win in India, which Team India has clearly shown.

The toss is definitely worth something - about 50 runs or so @ Dharamsala, probably about 60-70 @ Ranchi.   Unfortunately for the Kangaroos, they weren't able to take advantage of the opportunities offered.   Can't blame them for perpetuating the myth though - more often than not, India usually tends to cash in and pile up that big score that sets up the game for the inevitable outcome.  Defeats are hard to swallow.

Tosses are always worth that much most of the times. I can argue it's an even bigger advantage on Australia pattas where you win the toss, put up 500+ and let the scoreboard pressure work for you. At least in India good bowlers always have a chance.

If we can't manage to score 80 odd runs to win the series with all 10 wkts in hand, I will be cursing plenty of people.
