This is not national song. I would've agreed with you if they had walked out of 'Jana Gana Mana...'

Vande Mataram is the national song and Jana Gana... is our national anthem.

Oh yes, my mistake..,

It's not compulsory to sing.. but they could've just stayed there instead of walking out. Maybe they were forced to leave to avoid any hostilities or left on their own.

I think they should all sing 'Vande Mataram' and then 'Saare Jahan se Achcha'. People can choose either song, if tests of patiotism goes, at least be secular! May be they refused to sing Vande Mataram because they are bad singers and are embarrassed.

Sorry but this is a ridiculous suggestion. Why should they sing so much?

They are in that office to discharge certain civic duties. Not to audition for Indian Idol.

TBH "Vande Matram!" and "Inquilab Jindabad!" were two cries on which masses got inspiration and energy to relieve India off Clutches of Raj. The two are sacred.

At the time those opposed to "Vande Matram!" proposed separate Pakistan. To oppose the opposition Nehuru proposed "Jana Gana Mana"

But RSS opposed it because of "Adhinayak".

So since Pakistan was already  created Nehuru shouldn't have opposed "Vande Matram". But as ususal, what do you expect from a short sighted opportunistic self glorifying leader.

This poem was composed in December 1911, coinciding with the visit of King George V at the time of the Coronation Durbar of George V, and "Bharat Bhagya Bidhata" and "Adhinayaka" was believed to be in praise of King George V as per the British newspapers. The poem is created in 'shankarabharana' rag.The composition was first sung during a convention of the then loyalist Indian National Congress in Calcutta on 27 December 1911.[16] It was sung on the second day of the convention, and the agenda of that day devoted itself to a loyal welcome of George V on his visit to India. The event was reported thus in the British Indian press:

"The Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore sang a song composed by him specially to welcome the Emperor." (Statesman, Dec. 28, 1911)

"The proceedings began with the singing by Rabindranath Tagore of a song specially composed by him in honour of the Emperor." (Englishman, Dec. 28, 1911)
"When the proceedings of the Indian National Congress began on Wednesday 27th December 1911, a Bengali song in welcome of the Emperor was sung. A resolution welcoming the Emperor and Empress was also adopted unanimously." (Indian, Dec. 29, 1911)

Apparently, the whole test was to sing some patriotic songs, hence. They might as well not sing at all for all anybody cares. Media is only interested in the "force to sing" part and not "why sing at all"!
