Umesh is like Wahab Riaz, Both have similar bowling stats.

Shami would be a better option for India. 321 is a good score, Maybe 9-10 short. Also they may have under estimated the Sri Lankan team, They have some gun players but are not yet established/recognized at this level much.

Not 9-10 but atleast we were 20 short

Most teams wud as they are not big names so u dnt knw what to expect but soon team will take them as srs threat.

In a way it was a freak win for SL - if Tharanga played instead of Gunathilaka, I don't think they pull it off.  He got banned at the right time.

But India only have themselves to blame.  They left 25 runs on the table, and that, along with Umesh's generosity, and Jadeja's destruction by Mendis, cost them the game.

The biggest problem for our team is that we are still thinking and approaching the game with an old school attitude. Our target is 300 and when we get past that, we are very happy. The management of the team needs to completely revamp their attitude and approach.

ODI targets at the start of a game on a flat wicket should be minimum 350. With T20 cricket and new bats, 300 is a fairly ordinary total. Even 350 does not guarantee any safety, but at least gives bowlers a decent chance. This match was particularly disappointing. We wasted too many balls in the middle overs. At 30 over mark we were 169/2. At the minimum, we should have doubled that total, ideally got to 350. But no. Next 9  overs only produced 38 runs. 4 an over. Pathetic run rate that sucked all the momentum out.

Then while bowling, we continue to pick the most expensive ODI bowler of this decade because he is phasshhhhhtttt. And with him, we also keep picking Jadeja, who is out of form (got clobbered in the IPL) and has been pretty poor in ODIs last 3 years. Should have instead picked Krunal, who gives us also an aggresive hitting option in the middle order.

For the sake of Indian cricket in the long term, if we lose to SA and get knocked out, it might be a blessing in disguise. This old school approach to playing ODIs is no longer relevant and the earlier we realize it the better.

Get in Pant, get in Krunal. Get the power hitters. And get some economical bowlers instead of blind phashht obsession who doesn't even find a regular place in an IPL team.

Problem with Umesh is his lack of variations -  He seldom bowls slow deliveries - maybe its an ego thing - but he focuses on his pace more than the line and variation and on these kind of tracks thats the worst thing possible.    He didn't seem to learn and bowled at least 2-3 bad balls every over - if you aren't picking any wickets and are looking to build pressure - how can you do that if your main bowler keeps giving a boundary each over ?    Umesh wasn't spectacular against Pak as well -  horrible shot by Babar and tail enders picked up by him.

Its professional cricket and you are representing your country can't just lay back. Something did go wrong which produced unfavorable result, By the way SAF defended 300 against SL I Think.
