Quick question regarding Eng team

Recommended Posts

I read that England are planning to make a change and are planning to drop Jason Roy and play Jonny Bairstow in his place. I thought Bairstow's a middle order batsman and the backup wkt keeper and Sam Billings is Eng's backup opener. So how come Sam Billings isn't replacing Jason Roy at the top of the order coz that would be a like for like replacement with one aggressive opener replacing another? Also, I do recall Billings open for England in India - don't remember if it was in odis or T20s but do remember he was in the Eng squad.

Bairstow has opened in county I think.

He might have but I recall Billings opening for England in shorter formats. I thought he was their backup opener with Bairstow as the backup middle order/wkt keeping option.

Billings also have opened for Islamabad United in PSL, and England A side I think (England Lions maybe). I think he is very talented batsman with alot of shots. Made 170 odd in the List A match for A side.

Billings is easily an opener although he can bat at #3 and #4 as well.

I just double checked Eng squad and Billings is in Eng squad so I'm a bit baffled. If Billings, your backup opener who has opened for England and Eng A, is in the squad why would you play a middle order batsman (Bairstow) out of position as an opener?

I would've replaced Jason Roy with Billings else why's he in the squad? :dontknow:

I was surprised as well, Billings is a match winning batsman. But Bairstow is not bad, He is actually a very fine player even in ODIs, However Billings is much more explosive.

Because Bairstow is in really good form and has opened for his county team.

Its current form dictating the decision.

This...

Roy has been really bad so trying johnny isn't going to be bad anyway...

If it clicks he ll shut the door on roys career that's for sure.

He is more consistent

We are not debating whether Roy should be dropped or not. His form merits that he should be. It's more about who should replace him and with Billings as the backup opener one would've thought he would be the obvious replacement instead of Bairstow, who's more of a middle order batsman.

Billings hasn't been that great either... johnny was in good form hence getting picked that's it

Is Roy injured? If not then how can they bring Bairstow?

Not injured, He performed very poorly. You should have listen to comms during England's match, they tore him into pieces when ever they got a chance, especially when he took DRS appeal without asking Alex :hehe:
