I think people were so angry after the loss against Pak that we started thinking too much as fans. Both openers still after struggling in the finals did well through out the England tour. This is the same place where we will play the world cup and i rather just stick to this Dhawan/Rohit combo.

Idealy if our middle order can have Rahul and Pant who follow Kohli in the batting order, you can't ask for better than that.

Lets just hope Rahul stays for a long time and doesn't go out to injury again.  Such injury prone guy can't be a opener at this time. He still has age on his side and we can use him as opener post 2019 wc.

Nope im not counting that lost/......i have written about it a yr ago

Their batting in struggling conditions like SA NZ happened in 2013

RR has been poor post 2015

Our problem is not opening...our biggest problem is 4 and 5.Not the first time in the history of the game that a team lost 3 quick wickets at the top but once we lost 3 wickets in the final it felt like we were in our tail.so

for now opening is least of our worries or even the top 3

Rahul is an out and out opener why tinker with it...let Dhawan bat at 3 and Kohli at 4 definetely a massive upgrade over Yuvi or Raina at 4

Thing is Kohli is doing fine at 3, and even though there isn't a great difference, he might not like to come and play in the 30th over and knock around the ball like he likes to bat when first wicket falls in the first 15 overs and then he comes around and knocks around the ball for singles and doubles.

This is where the difference come and hence I rather stick to Kohli at 3 than send him at 4 to adjust others just like I rather stick to Rohit at top to adjust others.

Rahul has batted n done well at 4

No m not really up for changing ur best batsman kohli position , let ur best batsman get more balls n his fav position

Its like reducing ur best batsman effectiveness

At 3 kohli can control the game , at 4 he ll have to play acc to situation.

No 3 is one position that shudnt be even touched.

Ill have rahul or pant at 4 as they have more strokes then kohli , I find rahul more suited to that place .

Yeah I am ok with Rahul at 4 as well

Our biggest problem is not opening but there are some issues with it also and we have resources which we can try it to improve . There is no bad in improving

Sure but how about that fragile middle order we have right now...in fact opening and fast bowling or spin we have enough plugs to fill the hole but our middle order right now is the elephant in the room.

Asking Kohli to move to no.4 from 3 is just bullocks. Best batsman can not come at 4 and look to change his game. At 4 he might be coming in 35th-40th over.

We want Kohli to come earlier than that and start rotating to frustrate the opposition. This is what Kohli excels in, by rotating and enforcing the opposition captain to change the field and make his bowler change his line and length.

Kohli has to remain at no.3, the best player in the world, lets not try to even think about changing his position.

Amla averages 50+ , fastest to reach 1000, 2000 ..7000 runs ? has a SR of 90+ .  if you ask me hes a pretty limited ODI player and him with all these great stats has had close to zero impact on SA's results . So yeah statistically lot of mediocre players look great these days .

There is another opener comparable to Rohit , Ahmed shehzad .

6 ODI hundreds in 79 matches , Rohit has 11 in double the matches . Thats killer stats for a Pak opener isnt it ? Played the first match against india played a typical Rohit sharma innings . Pakistan did something we dont dare to do these days , replaced him with a young dasher and you know the rest is history !!

Shehzad averages 33 as opener with SR of 72 in 78 ODIs as opener. Since 2011 WC, Rohit has played 71 ODIs as opener, and averages 55 with a SR of 89. I don't see how any comparison can be made between the two.

As for Amla, his impact on multi-nation tourneys is minimal, but he won SA many bilateral games. Rohit did very well in recent multi-nation tourneys since 2011 WC: avg of 48 @ SR 85. Hence, it makes no  sense to say that Rohit has had no impact.

The only player who doesn't deserve his stats was probably Trott.

Middle order is biggest issue. I think selectors will drop Yuvi at some point, but not Dhoni. Hence, realistically speaking, we have to look for the best possible team while accommodating him. Rohit, Dhawan, Kohli, Dhoni, KLR, Pant/Jadhav, Hardik ... seems best bet in terms of batting.

Ofcourse we do

Again we ll have to try few things there as well. But If rahul gets set at 4...at least that wud be soughted

About 5 - dhoni, ill back him for atleast a year( i knw he is struggling but u have to take a call on backing someone n i have few reason to back him over yuvraj) at the same time hoping that pant does come good in watever chances he gets so i have the backup ready

Half the icf wanted to replace one of the openers with Pant and hence the thread.

I agree that our problem is middle order than opening and hence we need to stick to our openers for now but you can see how many different opening combinations have already come as many want a change including you.

Don't know about half icf but 80% of ICF if not more want Pant to replace Dhoni.

Ideal order for next 6-8 months could be

Dhawan

Rohit

Kohli

Pant

Rahul

Swap Pant and KLR, and it would be very good. But, selectors will not remove OMD (Old Man Dhoni).

It would be interesting IF Pant were to fail in the few chances he gets (I am not saying it will happen). I wonder who ICFers will go ga-ga over next - Kishan or Samson .

Thats better move than someone asking to move Kohli at 4 :hysterical:, the greatest LOI batsman at this time

.would rather have Pant at 5 who is a dasher than Rahul who is a proper technically correct bat

Even i want some change in opening as it has its issues, but what i dnt knw.....if u ask me ill say m nt sure

So we need to try few players at every slot apart from kohli.

U never knw new players might not work , or might be found out after intial success

We have a gr8 bench strength, but with it comes a challenge to get the best combination right . Best combination cant happen with certainty ....well have to try players for few slots to knws whats best

Who knws a kishen or pant might be the kind of jayasuria or gilly that might give u quick start and later our batsman can capatilize

Who knws they fail

Who knws pant might better work in middle or open.....or might not even

We need to try a lot more then few things, this is were we have wasted this tour

trying players like rahane n karthik hasnt gained anything till now so try something new

Ya it doesn't really matter we can send either one of them up, just that Pant at this time of his career needs to face more deliveries. I wantt him to bat with Kohli more and become a better batsman who can put price on his wicket.

Plays on sluggish UAE pitches and its just the start if his career , has been dropped 3-4 times already . Iam talking about Pak standards of batting , 6 hundreds already is pretty amazing stat and even they decided to drop him and opted for a dasher .

Why do you say Trott does not deserve those stats and Amla and Rohit somehow do ?

Rohit statistically had a good CT too , what impact did he have apart from sucking the momentum of the innings  ? Thats pretty much his whole career too . He has 2 double hundreds on pitches I bet even Trott could get on his day and one good innnins in Aus . I cant think any other innings of his where we won cos his contribution .
