Unfair playing conditions

Yes. India did win the game. Comprehensively in the end. But I thought the playing conditions were completely lopsided towards Australia in a shortened game. In 50 overs, India gets 20 power play overs, while Australia gets 20 PP overs out of 21 they were due to play. It's bizarre to say the least. Seems like penalty for the team batting first.

Is that so? Don't they proportionately reduce PP overs? It does seem lopsided if they don't..... unless that is accounted for in the revised target.

Biggest hole in D/L is the fact that overs get reduced, runs get adjusted, but team batting second always gets to bat with 10 wickets.

That is accounted for in the revised target. The target is not a plain and simple conversion of the same run-rate applied to the revised number of overs.

Runs are adjusted according to those 10 wickets.

Back in 2002 I read an article about the rain rules and tie rules that have been used in past. Most of the rules look way too ridiculuous in front of D/L system.

 

It's next to impossible to create a system which can be criticism free because cricket is so heavily number dependent that there will always be chances of picking holes in the rule which set a target based on some calculation.

 

Otherwise D/L is probably fairer option.

The only alternative suggested in the recent past was the VJD method. This method also employed a statistical way to calculate target. The other option is to not revise targets at all and -

 

1. Resume stalled ODIs the next day (without replay) or

2. Only play ODIs on grounds that have a roof (near impossible to achieve at this time) or

3. Make sure ground is dry during rain interruptions. Figure out a way to cover the whole ground and be able to drain all excess water, so that matches can resume as soon as rain halts. Too much time is spent in cricket trying to dry up the ground.

 

In the first case, you are still going to run into the same issue if match is stalled on multiple days.

This has been discussed numerous number of times ,how team batting first  is at disadvantage during rain affected match .Real problem we have is there is no alternative to D/L method at the moment which can be used when number of overs are reduced .

I think it was more of a pommie style whinge.  The fact that an Aussie captain stooped to this betrays the level of competitiveness between India - OZ.  These 2 teams are really going at each other to be the "top dog" and definitely don't like each other much.  I think India's ODI series loss in Oz is really stuck in VK's craw.  The games were much closer than that scoreline indicated.   But the scoreline probably gave the Kangaroos ample crowing opportunities.  And now Kuptaan wants payback.   I expect to see all tracks get decent amount of grip and turn for this series - not the total concrete roads that we've seen often in India home ODIs.   

 

I expected India to win this series with a degree of comfort anyway, before it began.  But if we win the 2nd game......... :)
