He was enjoying holidays. he talked to SRT about it and once he got the assurance, he applied. Link? Not even one credible newspaper/outlet reported this news. He was backed by Gavaskar on news channel: “Ravi was the one who started the turnaround in 2014, the work ethic changed under him. He is the right choice for the coach,” said Sunil Gavaskar to NDTV on Tuesday. “Ravi is 100% committed. His professionalism is worth seeing,” Gavaskar added. But it remains to be seen whether the CAC, that had rejected Shastri for Kumble last year, agrees with Gavaskar’s views and gives Kohli the coach he always wanted. It was basically Kohli vs Ganguly but kohli has to captain and play so obv his choice would be preferred. Link to comment

It was Kohli who wanted Shastri as coach and board has to give whatever the skipper is comfortable with. But as to why Dravid and Zak didn't come with team Ind is a mystry. Shastri had said he wanted his own support staff and assistants to help him to give results. https://goo.gl/AJzQiZ https://goo.gl/foFJ4d Adi BB 1 Link to comment

Een bowling under 128K in IPL , he got so many wickets and gave the Least runs, his fitness was a BIG Question Mark and still he managed to out bowl the best pacers even in his last IPL matches, I was kinda surprised as ZAK bowled between 120 to 130K and on Patta wickets and still was dreaded. i am not against Bharat Arun , he has done a great JOB under Ravi Shastri , no doubt about that but I feel ZAK could have been a shade better than him as the bowling coach...Hope ZAK becomes India's bowling coach soon. I am one of the few guys who hopes that Zaheer Khan never becomes the bowling coach of India. He cut down his pace a few years after debut and made the famous statement, " Indian bodies are not designed to bowl fast ". https://amp.sports.ndtv.com/cricket/indian-bodies-not-designed-to-bowl-fast-zaheer-khan-1565076?akamai-rum=off He does not have any experience of coaching big teams either. I don't see any credential for a top bowling coach in Zaheer. I hope he is never able to become the bowling coach of India. Adi BB 1 Link to comment

Ganguly was part of the CAC which was in charge of selecting the coach. He can't avoid blame here. He had every opportunity to convince the other members of the committee to select a different coach. He/they didn't. Now he is acting holier than thou when he is also responsible for Shastri being coach. Switchblade 1 Link to comment
sriniwu
irrespective of who the coaches are, there should also be some mechanism to gauge a players' willingness to learn, execute, improve...eg: murali vj with his "i don't take advice bro" attitude should have been spotted/ counseled a lot earlier Switchblade 1 Link to comment
Number
Dada and Tendu screwed us by appointing Shastri. Link to comment
kirkutfan
Great players do not necessarily make great coaches. Chappell was a great player, but couldn’t make it in a coaching capacity either in Australia or in India at the national team level. John Wright was not as successful as a player, but contributed a lot to Indian cricket. So, one cannot necessarily assume that Zaheer is better than Bharat Arun, Kumble is better than Shastri etc. Better players, yes. Better coaches? I don’t know. Moochad
We need him now. Even good batsmen like Pujara and Rahane are regressing and potential batsmen like Rahul are failing to launch Link to comment
Tibarn
He served as our batting consultant during the previous tour of SA a few years ago. Many of our batsmen played a great attack like Steyn, Vilander, and co well that series. His ability as head coach is TBD, but as a batting coach/consultant he has somewhat of a track record.
