He has the most perfect left arm spin action. You have to remember LBW laws then and how no front foot LBWs were out of question then.One thing I agree he along with other spin quartet are overrrated to some extent.

 

Kapil Dev said it best Kumble and Bhajji are best spinners to have played for India.This was before Ashwin's emergence.

Indian spin quarlet probably were similar to early day BD spinners or current Afg spinners. Since Indians had no other match winners at that time they probably celebrated them and eventually since they were retired and no longer played their skills kept increasing over "chai biscuit samosa hyperboles" until it reached legendary levels in commentary from people who had never seen them bowl.
