Which team would India prefer to play in semis?

We did not beat England, but Sri Lanka ended up beating England and Sri Lanka isn't even in the playoffs. On their day anyone can beat anyone. 

 

I think both the semi finals will be really tight and NZ has a chance to beat Australia and knock them out. Similarly, even though we lost once already to England, we have a good chance to beat England. It's not like facing New Zealand would have been easy for us. Their lefty Trent Boult could have tested us early and might have gotten Rohit or Rahul earlier to put us back. These little scenarios matter sometimes.

 

Don't go by how NZ performed today. Don't be surprised if India vs New Zealand its the final. It's all open. Any four teams can qualify for the finals. 

NZ are the 2nd biggest chokers after SA in general (2015 was an exception; 2011 was not), and they always do badly against Aus in crucial matches (not league stages). their batting is too dependent on kane and ross. there's a high chance for them to get knocked out if they face Aus. realistically, their best chances of beating the SFs are Ind, Eng and Aus in that order.

Who is not a choker then? I don't call losing in semis as choking. Losing in semis means, you were good enough to be in semis but just not good enough to reach finals and be among top 2. Thats it. It's nothing to do with choking. 

 

If every semi final loser starts being called choker, then we basically are losing grip of understanding what is a regular defeat to what is a choke. Choke is the most overused and misused word in sports today.

 

Australia were crazy favorites as always in 2015 final. 

 

NZ going into any World Cup were never favorites, they are always rated as Dark Horse. They made it to semis and thats good. If they lose their, doesn't mean they choked, they just weren't good enough to reach finals that day as their history says, they are bit inconsistent. Nothing choke with that. India too lost to Australia in semi finals in 2015 and also like crazy in 2003. That doesn't mean we choked. We just were not good enough on the day to Australia.

a choke in my book means not playing to full potential due to the added mental pressure, etc. I said in my post that NZ did not choke in the 2015 WC, but that they did in 2011 because they folded very meekly in KOs. and yes, we choked in 2003 WC final - we were not strong enough to beat aus, but our bowling just fell to pieces even though it had been one of the best in that WC.

 

the 2011 final, in my book, was one were both teams played reasonably to their potential, thus resulting in a close match unlike the 1999, 2003, 2007 editions.

 

anyway, returning to the original thread, it looks like we will be playing england.
