Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has decided to take a break from cricket, owing to difficulties experienced by him with regards to his mental health, the team psychologist Dr. Michael Lloyd confirmed on Thursday. D'Arcy Short has been roped in as Maxwell's replacement for the last T20I against Sri Lanka.

"Glenn Maxwell has been experiencing some difficulties with regards to his mental health. As a result, he will spend a short time away from the game. Glenn was proactive in identifying these issues and engaging with support staff," Lloyd said.

Maxwell's decision was met with a lot of empathy from within the cricket board, as executive general manager of national teams Ben Oliver stated that the well-being of the players and staff was a priority.

"The well-being of our players and staff is paramount. Glenn has our full support. Cricket Australia will work collaboratively with Cricket Victoria's support staff to ensure Glenn's well-being and his reintegration into the game. We ask that everyone gives Glenn and his family and friends space; and respects their privacy at this time," Oliver said.

"He's a special player and an important part of the Australian cricket family. We hope to see him back in the team during the summer. It's important we look after Glenn and all our players."

The kind of Insecurity and uncertainty our players have under the bew-rat regime, won’t be surprised that a few of our players suffer from some issues. Mental health is ignored in our part of the world and not taken seriously.

Take example of Karun Nair,  scored  a 300 in a test match vs the top 2 side and still totally falls off the face of earth in a couple of months from there.

In fact  he is not even in the scheme of things even as a reserve,.

If I was in his place I would certainly be stressed out about it or even depressed and may give up hopes of a comeback

Either he has a strong support system or he is mentally super strong.

he surely has so many t20 contracts around the world its surely not some financial stress may be identity related.

Depression doesn’t have to be due to financial stress. Plenty of poor people lead happy lives and plenty of wealthy people are depressed.

Clearly he is clinically depressed or mentally fatigued.

I hope after this break he comes back strong as an individual & a player. Quite strange that mental health aspect is not much discussed in cricket when top cricketers like Trott, Trescothick, Flintoff, Hoggard, Tait went through it & effectively ended the international career of former two.

I often wonder how cricketers from the subcontinent would be coping against such difficulties & holding themselves back. More strength to those who battle such issues.

He has contracts but must have been feeling the stress of underwhelming performance.  In the world cup his team backed him fully but he was a disappointment there also.
