Yes, it was a good delivery, but it didn't open him up.  Shaw'ty did that on his own.  He was looking to play towards wide mid-on, mid-wicket - i.e. across the line with the bat face turned.  If he had been looking to play straight, he had a reasonable shot at defending it.  Even if he didn't middle it, he could have had a thickish edge that either squirts along the ground, or falls into noman's land.  As it was, he "opened himself up" and offered his stumps to be utterly scuttlef**ked by Southee.  A good delivery no doubt, but a very poor shot - inexcusable really, for an opener playing in NZ conditions.  Chalk it up to adrenalin, and a desire to dominate at every chance.  That is an asset, but it needs to be tempered with, armored within crystal clear shot selection - recognizing context.  Veeru was a master at this.  And that's why, for a batsman with very limited footwork, and a very aggressive batting method, was able to successfully bat beyond 10-15 overs, very regularly.

Wake up from daydream, and get back to reality :) We used to say this to Cricketics too, but he was less optimist than you :)

You may still be hoping for a miracle for Ind to win this test :)

No, I really did not think this was beyond india as shown by the fight later today and pitch condition. But all the wickets were due to the team being mentally shot. Cannot do much or hope for much when they have given up in their minds. The kohli dismissal was shocking. He cannot observe long periods of pressure and always looks for runs.

And NONE of this is surprising for Indian team, it is a surprise when they dont capitulate this way.

This capitulation we could predict, you just dont seem to have followed Indian cricket for very long (or have developed a loss of memory from such debacles by our team).

I an watching since 2000. But, yes some of the good fightbacks, 4 sena victories in one year had given me hope. Also, nz was a side that had forgotten how to win. Ind may yet comeback in 2nd test but I believe the hope was not unreasonable this time, it's just they have learnt nothing, done nothing different. Also, bumrah's injury has turned the course against us completely. We could have beening leading by 100 odd now with some wickets in hand.

Cricket is very unpredictable game. So still hoping for some entertainment tomorrow, particularly from rahane and pant. But I believe kohli's wicket had sealed the deal.

This has been the most spineless show by our team on NZ soil since I started watching. 

 

2002 tour had those lottery pitches, so won't count them.
