Ankit_sharma03 Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 (edited) Imagine this contest on absolute ODI Flat decks ATG Ind XI Sachin Rohit Kohli Azhar (horses for courses pick) Yuvi Dhoni (C & WK) Kapil Dev Kumble Zak Shami/ Sir Jadeja/ Srinath (shud be picked horses for courses) Bumrah 12th man- Shami/ Sir Jadeja/ Srinath (the one who doesnt play) Sir jadeja again has a good record against england Azhar avg 65 against england so horses for courses pick ATG ENG XI trescothick Bairstrow Root KP Stokes Morgon (capt) Flintoff Butler Swann/Adil Rashid Gough Anderson/Bob willis 12th man- Ian botham Swann/adil rashid- India did play swann well in ODIs so Adil rashid shud be consisdered keeping opposition in mind n specially kohli Really wanted to get in Archer but played only 14 games. But in few years if u add Archer to this attack ....This ENG team would be seriously crazy They can also think of dropping one of the batsman n getting in more bowling with botham as they have way to much of batting India has an edge in bowling but England batting is brutal Edited April 11, 2020 by Ankit_sharma03
Ankit_sharma03 Posted April 11, 2020 Author Posted April 11, 2020 @Gollum @zen @Jimmy Cliff - how about this for a contest
Jimmy Cliff Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 If we are playing on absolute flat decks, we need to get in Sehwag instead of Azhar. Honestly I am tempted to have a top 5 like this: SRT Sehwag Kohli Yuvraj KLR But clearly KLR needs more game time at 5 to be selected for a team like this so that's that. Otherwise I think we have a better top order and slightly better bowling whereas they have a better and more explosive middle order. Overall too close to call decisively either ways. A 10 match series would probably finish 5-5.

He under achieved in ODI coz most days he didnt convert the starts. Rohit starts slow but by the end he causes damage like no one. Im tempted to have KL in ever ATG indian lineup rather going horses for courses but he has played on 30 around games. If KL is allowed i wud love to add jofra archer to england squad .

I am just not a fan of Rohit's approach in the powerplay overs. Yes he can do a lot of damage in the latter overs but how many times is he gonna survive till the 35th-40th overs. Rather have someone like Sehwag who will look to make use of the powerplay overs day in day out especially if we are playing on flat tracks. I firmly believe only 1-2 batsmen in the line-up should be allowed to "consolidate" or "get their eye in" especially when you are playing a batting heavy side like England. zen 1

Rohit sharma avg as opener shows that method has worked for him pretty well at a consistent rate. And he has had many daddy 100s add his supreme consistency. If im not wrong his numbers as opener is better then even sachin. Now he also has a great wc in his bag Sehwag approach also had its down side- he gives quick starts but many days didnt convert it and that he ll score those 30-40 runs every game. I ll take in 20-20 Rohit on his good days will score daddy hundred va sehwag who on his good days can also throw his wkt out of nowere. I consider dravid more of consolidator whom i have kept away or even someone like root who will not damage as much as someone like kohli or rohit cud once they are set. The thing with kohli, sachin, rohit is not only they can bat long but they can hurt opposition n cover the deficit in a span of few overs. Also i want someone with tendulkar who takes times. Always felt tendulkar was at his best when he decided to attack...with sehwag he mostly took other role. With rohit he ll have to attack. This is where once KL has few good years will complete this ATG odi batting side into beast of a batting lineup

This is where once KL has few good years will complete this ATG odi batting side into beast of a batting lineup It has worked well for him for sure. But whether it has served the best interests of the team is debatable. He will get daddy hundreds on his day but that will be like once in every 10-15 games but what happens in your average game where you have Tendulkar settling down after 15 overs, Kohli playing as an accumulator in the first part of his innings and Rohit taking his own time in the powerplay overs. That is not very optimal from the pov of maximizing the available resources. That's why I prefer Sehwag as the opener. If he fires completely he will most probably win us the game, otherwise he will either give us a good start with a cameo or get out without wasting balls getting his eye in. Tendulkar took his time while playing along side Sehwag as he was coming towards the end of his prime. In a fantasy All Time contest, I am assuming all players are playing at their peak so I am imagining a SRT circa 96-98 opening alongside peak Viru . I don't think peak SRT needs a defensive partner playing along side him to go for the attack.
Stan AF Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 Good match-up. Atleast 7 members of the English setup are from post 2005-2010. Trescothick is my favourite English opener. Used to be Robin Smith before him. Too batting heavy for my liking. Three quality all rounders in Botham Flintoff and ATG Stokes. I'd replace Anderson with Bob Willis. Also include Archer in. As for indian team I'd drop Kumble. Never considered him as an ODI bowler.

zen Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 (edited) Eng 11 - I could have Roy and maybe Botham in. Roy has one of the highest SRs in ODIs from those with 2k or more runs - Eng is now known for its high SR game. Played that magnificent knock in the SF, a high pressure game, as well. Roy-Bairstow is a killer opening combination esp. if one of them can get going. Botham at his peak is destructive both with the bat and ball. Also good enough to play in the top order. Buttler with an avg of 40+, SR of 120, and like 9 100s would be batting at 5 to 7. Ind 11 - Not a fan of picking Azhar due to the match fixing saga. Not too sure of Rohit’s utility in an AT11. He has a good average no doubt but even Kapil would if he played to get to his 50 first (or remain not out) irrespective of match situations. Talking about Kapil, he can be utilized in the top order too. Sehwag has the highest SR (100+) among top order batsmen and some good knocks in tough conditions including in NZ Overall, after relevant changes, both teams are evenly matched. It will be a batting shootout Edited April 12, 2020 by zen
Gollum Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 (edited) Honestly, I find this ATG Eng side more convenient to face than the NZ one. Unlike Kiwis (Hadlee, Bond, Boult ) no worries about getting blown away by this bowling attack. We are superior or at worst equal in almost all departments, our bowling might be a tad better than theirs all conditions considered. Our top 3 is better, MO no way worse...peak UV/MS/Kapil trio is very explosive, all 3 being elite match winners with the bat. This is an easier match-up for us compared to NZ. Even on swinging/seaming low scoring pitches I back our team to win 6/10 unlike the case against NZ, on spinning pitches we'll more often than not crush them. On double paced wickets, Poms have historically struggled, even their greatest side was unable to get things going on one such used wicket against poyzzz in 2017 CT SF. Only on 350+ pattas will they be able to keep up with our side, don't underestimate how good our batters were at their peak, UV and MS used to do what current Poms do a good 12-15 years back. India to win 65% of the matches in this H2H. Edited April 11, 2020 by Gollum
zen Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 (edited) Difference b/w the two sides is the approach in batting. If we draw parallels to a 400 mts race, key Ind batsmen like to run the whole race so they can start slowly to pick up the pace in the last 100 mts (improves individual batting stats). Eng runs it like a 4 * 100 mts relay race (a team exercise) where the baton is passed on so everyone is trying to run the 100 mts segment quickly (improves team’s par scores). Eng’s approach can be more lethal. Though Ind has players like Sehwag, Sachin (of old times), Yuvi, and Kapil who can not only start positively but also continue with that momentum. In a five games series in good batting conditions, Ind could start strongly to win the first 2 (100s from batsmen and good spells from the bowlers). Eng would then get its act together to win the next two. The last game will be the decider, the pressure game. The result of which I leave to your imagination. Edited April 11, 2020 by zen
