Should Rahul Tripathi play T20Is for India?

a) Since many fans assume that every Ind player is auditioning for a place in the Ind team in IPL and not just simply playing for his franchise

b) Anyone who plays 2-3 good knocks in IPL should automatically play for India

Based on a & b: yes

He was the 3rd highest scoring Indian opener in 2017 with the highest strike rate.

Good to know. But since this is Year 2020, what about something closer to it?

I thought you were talking about completed tournaments (mentioned 2017 and nothing much closer to 2020) .... otherwise:

Nope he doesn't.  Age is also a factor & he ain't better than Mayank for sure.

Opening is one area Where currently there are so many contenders.  Lolli & Shastri are facing tough time in leaving out failed Dhawan for Rahul..  So Tripathi has no hope.

His IPL record is way better than Mayank's. Deliberately goes on the attack in the powerplay overs. Mayank has his days but he plays like a proper batsman, meaning he plays it slow when the conditions are not conducive for hitting.

Coincidentally, it was Mayank Agarwal who Rahul Tripathi replaced at the opening slot for RPS in 2017 because Mayank was failing at the top of the order lol. Tripathi then came in and scored like seven 30+ scores in a row.

Mayank is also 29 and he is in even better form and he is yet to make his T20I debut. There is just too much competition for Indian opener spot in T20s, so tripathi may not even make his debut, sadly. If they want to try out left - right combo they might go with someone young like padikkal or maybe push pant to open

in T20s good openers are dime a dozen. "Lower order power hitters who can bowl a bit" is what young aspirants should try to be, if they want to play for India

Mayank is better suited for 50 overs. He doesn't stand out in T20s from the other openers in line. Tripathi is a pinch-hitter style opener which makes him perfect for T20s when you need to take advantage of the opening powerplay overs and give the team momentum to build on.

So far Mayank is scoring at much better S/R than Rahul even who is out best  T20 bat.

Tripathi no doubt has potential but he cannot go past established guys yet.  Then he is competing with not only Mayank but Shaw,  Gill & Paddikal.  Tbh he should've played for India right after that breakout 2017 season.  Unlucky guy like Rana both of them deserved a T20 call up earlier.
