Players personal stuff become a matter of public discussion when the said couple use Indian cricket for their soft PR (a certain WAG in official photos, attending team receptions etc.). Interesting that you chose to ignore the part about prioritising T20s over preparation for Tests. We will have a scenario here our captain will go into the Tests, that too D/N test, without having played a competitive FC match for nearly 10 months! Captain pathetic setting the right example there. If in his arrogance, he thinks he is bigger than the game, then reality will bite him soon.

The series was already lost by that time Dhoni quit. We had a young captain ready to captain the last test as he already captained in the first test. Dhoni was not a good test captain anyways and he left the scene to make Kohli get used to the captaincy job. Also the world cup was around the corner and he needed the much needed rest. Agreed on the Kohli bit about using PR. Didn't like him bringing Anushka into the team photo with full regalia.

Dhoni should have been sacked as a Test captain after a spineless 0-8 surrender within a span of 8 months. Srini's backing (due to CSK links) saved him. Any one with a modicum of self respect would have resigned after that episode but not Dhoni. That's where the rot started. Sadly from then on, the captain and star players have had a gala time.

 

Kohli is only continuing the same tradition, else should have been sacked after the 2019 WC.

Captains and star players have been having gala time from Indian cricket's inception. You must be naive to believe that Sunnyji and Kapil paaji didn't get backing from selectors at their times and not quitting despite several failures to inspire confidence in their teammates. Ganguly didn't go away on his own and was hanging on to the captaincy when his time was up. Dhoni was not an aberration. He was the norm for Indian cricket. Only Dravid and Sachin resigned because their captaincy was not working. Kohli does far worse than not inspiring. I suspect he undermines anyone who has the ability to overtake his stardom. We have examples of captains from the past regarding this behavior also. Junior players better play chamchas or get the shaft.

I suspect the falling away of Rahul, Pujara and Rahane is partly because of Kohli. Rahul was identified by Viv Richards as the next big thing back in 2016. What happened to him now. The latter two have somehow survived. How many times has Kohli put Dhawan ahead of Rahul in tests and put Rohit ahead of Pujara and Rahane destroying their confidence. As late as the Eng tour in 2018, Pujara's place was not secure. He made his debut in 2010 before Kohli and had a matchwinning 4th innings knock in that match against Aussies at home which sealed the series. If kohli is not insecure about these players, we would have had one of the top lineups like we had in 00s in addition to the bowling which would have resulted in multiple series wins abroad. I hope Kohli doesnt place Saha ahead of Pant this time. This will be a blunder of epic proportions. Gill should open in all 4 tests ahead of Rohit

Player power has always been there but since the Dhoni era and esp after Amarnath being sacked as selector for suggesting Dhoni be sacked, it has gone beyond limits.

 

In the last decade, Ganguly was removed from captaincy and ultimately from the team and even forced to retire in 2008, oldies were removed from ODIs and could not do much. Can't imagine such a thing happening now. Only Dada can crack the whip to restore a semblance of BCCI authority

lol you think Amarnath would make a great selector. He was ready to make Gambhir captain after the 0-8 fiasco. What was the problem you might ask. Gambhir was going through a lack of form throughout the 0-8. In the last test in adelaide, Dhoni had to miss due to poor over rate and Sehwag captained with similar result. Sehwag was also not in good form. Dravid and Laxman retired, Sachin had no interest in captaining and Kohli was too young to captain. What else would you want the selectors to do.

Anyone but Dhoni. His dip in form notwithstanding (concussion in England did not help), Gambhir would have made an excellent captain as he proved with KKR  complete turnaround and with Delhi. If he was not an option, Zak would have made an excellent skipper as well. He was the leader of the bowling group and commanded immense respect in the dressing room.

 

The ifs and buts! But back to my point - Srini saving Dhoni set a terrible precedent and later Kohli getting Kumble sacked only made the rot worse. The earlier this unrestrained power is cut down, better it is for our cricket.

Gambhir would have made an excellent non-performing captain like Ganguly and we will be back to square one with the need for another Dravid/Kumble/Dhoni. Bowlers make interesting captains but they have to remain fit which is hard for a fast bowler. Fast bowling is a tough enough job. Captaincy should not be trusted to a bowler. Zaheer could have made a stop gap captain like Kumble not a full term one. Srini mama doing this is not a precedent as such things were done in years past. It happened during Gavaskar's time and even much before that. Lets just conclude with the point we agree on that is there is too much power in the captain and the selection panel is a joke. I'm not sure if Ganguly can change it because he is cut from the same cloth.

 What stopped him from playing the D/N practice match when the T20s were over? The schedule is what it is, upto the captain to decide his (and team's)priorities. Our captain chose to prioritise a dead T20I rubber over FC matches.  Not just that he even kept Mayank and Saini on the bench for the T20Is instead of letting them play the 1st practice match. 

 

Let him be happy with the T20 series win, which counts for zilch. Will wait to hear his excuses for the likely test series thrashing. In NZ, it was we are prioritising T20 WC.
