Was 1996 WC win greatest cricketing triumph?

It does have a case

  • An underdog won the competition by remaining unbeaten (steamrolled many teams)
  • Innovative use of power play
  • Reputation of being able to chase anything, which made other teams tremble to take wrong decisions (Ind in SF)
  • Broke new ground by being the first host (co host w/ Ind & Pak) to win
  • Also first team to win chasing a total in the final

Also it established SL as force. They became full time test nation only 15(?) years before 1996 WC and by late 90s they were good team.

While the 1979-92 Pak side is probably the most consistent ODI Asian side at world events: 1979 WC SF, 1983 WC SF, 1985 B&H WCC F, 1987 WC SF, 1989 Nehru Cup winner, and 1992 WC winner .... the 1996 SL can claim to be the best one

96 team has better legacy because they continued to be quite strong for over a decade after that. But purely talking about world cup win story, you can't beat 1:66 odds victory in 83. Unless Afghanistan wins next edition

Kapil Dev's team achievement was the greates truimp. No one was in particualr great but they worked flawlessly as a team. Can you imagine Mohinder, Madan lal and Sandhu doing it all for bowling. These were not tearaway bowlers but were experienced and knew their limitations. The best ever.
