Test Fantasy Draft Post 1970s debut?

@Adamant, why Barry Richards though? Played a few tests, so either you have watched him and saw something special, or you were thinking about his triple. Him over Cook, Anwar, Gooch, how?

Introducing Zen's team - The Wolves 

 

 

 

Vision: Play attacking cricket without the fear of failure. Bring excitement and energy to Test cricket. Display a brand of highly watchable cricket. 

Mission: To win one more game than the opponent in a series. 

Goal: Assuming that the same 12 play in a variety of conditions - to forge a unit that is able to excel in most type of conditions. Play as a unit, not individuals . 

 

Structure: 

• A bunch of best high strike rate batsmen that will take the attack to the opposition. 
• A group of highly specialized low strike rate fast bowlers that will make the opposition tremble with fear. 

 

The team so far:

• High strike rate batting game changing geniuses: Sehwag, Pietersen, and Gilchrist, supported by the big hitting AR, Flintoff 
• Elegance and batting poetry on display through Gower 
• Technical brilliance and solidity through Gavaskar, arguably world best test batsman since 1970 
• The A-B-C of fast bowling with Akhtar, Bond, and Cummins. Even one express bowler can provide a bowling attack with an edge. This 11 has two lethal express bowlers in Akhtar and Bond, who can not only bowl pace, but also swing, reverse swing, york, and bounce. These two make the world's fastest opening bowling attack. Cummins is fast too and as good as a Lillee or a McGrath in a Aus AT11 setup, but unlike those two, he can bat well. These three fast bowlers are supported by the quick fast bowling AR, Flintoff, whose reverse swing, yorkers and fast cutters made the powerful 2000s Aus side bend on its knees. I can already see legs shaking in the opponent team! 
• Well if a team somehow manages to survive the fastest bowling ever test, the off-spin wizard, Murali, is waiting to get them! 

 

Two more spots to fill in R11 and R12, can't wait to see who will join the Wolves

I will pick Mark Waugh. All conditions batsman and an absolute treat to watch on eyes. Good off spinner also like Root, has 59 test wickets to his name.

Barry Richards is very highly rated by almost all his contemporaries, some of them rated him as the best batsman they were saw and mind you even better than Gavaskar as an opener. 

 

In 1970s county cricket used to be very competitive and the players who dominated in county crickets were mostly top international players.  Barry opened alongside the West Indian ATG opener Gordon Greenidge (who is rated higher than Cook, Anwar etc) and almost always overshadowed him.  

 

In Supertests, where Kerry Packer assembled the world's best cricketers, he was the best batsman by a fair margin and mind you he wasn't a defensive opener, he was aggressive and one of the best strokeplayers of that time. 

 

I am quite sure that some posters here might not rate him and that's fair too (coz he played only 4 tests) but in my view he is one of the greatest batsman ever and it was a travesty that he didn't have a long international career. 

 

Also I haven't seen him bat, actually I am quite young, but it's not necessary to watch a player in his career to have an understanding of how great he was,  views of contemporaries and how celebrated that cricketer is can also shape your view. 

 

I never watched Viv Richards bat too, but that doesn't stop me from rating him amongst the best. 

 

I also rate Graeme Pollock very highly even though he played only 21 tests, but he debuted in 60s so just couldn't pick him.

A good team should have a good enough keeper otherwise the quality of team goes down.
