Trichromatic Posted December 23, 2021 Author Posted December 23, 2021 Jadeja's batting at MCG 2020 After getting bowled out for 36 at Adelaide, India dismissed Aus for 195 at MCG in first inning. This match is famous for Rahane's captain's knock, brilliant 112. What went unnoticed was India were 173-5 and previous track record would have meant a collapse with barely 30 runs lead for India at best against Starc, Cummins and Hazelwood. Jadeja had a partnership of 121 runs with Rahane and when Jadeja got out India were leading by 100+ runs. India had to chase just 70 runs. It could have tricky if chase was 150-170. I couldn't find a proper video. Watch the video below. Jadeja won 1 match with his batting, Ashwin saved 1 test with his batting. Many players are not able replicate that during their lifetime. Kumble improved his record in later stages of his career. Ashwin didn't play England series at peak of his career and missed out lot of matches because team had better pacers. Ashwin doesn't have 5-fers slightly due to his performance and more due to presence of others bowlers who could take wickets. Kumble was great at wicket taking. There isn't much to separate Ashwin from Kumble. But overall point of the thread is that spinners have played a vital role with both and ball, be it Ashwin, Jadeja or Kuldeep or Sundar and this is a major difference between Indian team and other teams. Them being good with bat meant we could cover shortcomings of middle order also. Those days are gone when they would leak runs quickly. At bare minimum, they ensure that one end is tightly held. For other teams, their secondary bowling options are turning out to be useless. Pacers from SA, NZ, Aus, Eng in India, visiting spinners to Aus, NZ. Vijy and AuxiliA 1 1

He kept improving in 2nd half of his career, as did Ashwin. however, the latter's career is not over yet.
zen Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 (edited) On the other hand, the great SDP scored a 90 in SA (his first test in SENA), won a test in Eng (5-er + a 50 -> his 2nd series in SENA) and almost took India to a win at Lords (last man out on 31 iirc) in his first two series in SENA (has not played in Aus where he could have been more successful with the bat or NZ where he could have been more successful with the ball) while some of these “experienced” spinners have had almost zero impact apart from law of averages working in favor after playing tons of games over the years (or cashing in after seamers have built up pressure) or getting to play on relatively favourable surfaces (esp. in Aus).
