Ravindra Jadeja vs Kapil Dev in Tests

Recommended Posts

Availability was the biggest asset for Kapil. Unlike Imran Khan who picked and chose which tests or series he wanted to play, Kapil was lone warrior.

Imran Khan is not even half the allrounder Kapil or Botham ever were.Imran Khan was a plodder who could hold one end. Kapil and Botham on the hand could win matches on their own with bat.

How would Imran Khan the bowler be without aide of reverse swing as a bowler is for another discussion.

Chucking Murali would not be even be half the bowler he was banned from using Doosra.

Jadeja is not even in same ball park as allrounder as Kapil .Just like Stokes who is better than Jadeja. Kapil would number one pick in all formats not just tests.

Those are generic argument given for any attacking batsmen with impression that attacking batsman can win on their own, while defensive batsman can't.

Ok this might merit a conversation BASED on stats. BUT kapil if he had this side would have been GOAT. For that time and his fitness was majestic. Anyday would have kapil over jadeja, he won us wc (first one). He started a revolution. Not tiny gauvasker.

Kapil is hands down the most important cricketer in Indian history. He's a rare breed from our perspective. Played 130+ tests, minus one, on the trot when we barely had a pacer let alone a pace AR.

However, Jadeja isn't far behind in tests at all as some here would like to believe. Many SENA teams would prefer a spin AR like Jadeja over Kapil.

Also, Jadeja is a bigger asset in subcontinent conditions. He has a great record vs Aus and Eng.

Both were great athletic fielders too.

Batting Avg and Runs per Innings:-

Kapil Dev - 31, 28.5

Ian Botham - 33.5,  32.3

Imran Khan - 37.5, 30.2

Ravindra Jadeja - 37.5, 30.3

Chris Cairns- 33, 31.9

Andrew Flintoff - 31.5, 29.5

Hence proved that Kapil is comfortably the weakest test batter of all and he is overhyped in India as if he is way better batsman than all the names mentioned above. You can’t be adamant on just one thing- performance vs WI. Need to look at several other factors. His home away split isn’t good either.

Do you want your lower order batsman to hang in there to score 20s or 30s  and remain not out which makes no difference in outcome of the match  and score 100s when team is already in good position on flat wickets . Imran Khan pushed and plodded to three hundreds against India on flattest pitches where top order scored plenty runs and he just captilized on tiring attack.

or you want your lower order who is also capable to scoring runs when top order fails.Kapil could score runs against any bowling attack in any format. He played in the side where middle order batsmen averaged in 30s.

Kapil could walk in at 20/4 and 31/6 against rampaging Alan Donald who was running thru batting lineup which had guys like Sachin, Azhar and score 129.His tied test 100,his scored against best bowling attack of WI.

Maxwell is proving what lower order batsman should be able to do when top order fails in t20 match against SA.Maxwell won Aussies a world cup. Kapil Dev and Botham could do that in tests. Kapil could do in odis also and he won India a world cup with his bat.Unlike Maxwell and Botham Kapil played for a very weak team.

Imran Khan was a useless batsman who was nothing but a stat padder for a lower order batsman. His batting was useless. Some morons act as if he was Kallis or Sobers.

Kapil's avg of 31 is much more impactful than useless Imran's 37.

Ideally you want a lower order batsman who can walk into in team as a bowler but still capable of batting at number 6 or be Kallis or Sobers.Botham was far superior batsman than any of those four allrounders.

To me Botham is still the greatest allrounder at his peak.A guy who could score 14 100s and average in low 20s with ball  at his peak.He was as natural as anyone else plus great slip flielder like Kallis .Kapil was best athlete among those four allrounders but also played in era where he had no help from anywhere.

Kapil was the trailblazer and he is one of main reasons why BCCI is so powerful today.

Imran Khan was nothing but a useless plodder for batsman. He was very good bowler.

Jadeja's bowling has become worse as his batting improved that is his biggest problem.Like Shane Warne said about Monty playing one test 50 times.Jadeja has shown no improvement as bowler. He has been ineffective in whiteball cricket for most part..

Kapil Dev could win the match on his batting alone.

How many matches did he win with his batting?

Botham scored 149 in Headingley in what many called as one of the greatest innings.Bob willis took 8 wickets while defending 130. Kapil gave India 150 target while scored 129 that too away in SA but there was no Bob Willis playing for India.Kapil had to be both Bob Willis and Botham for India. That is why you don't see his name in great wins.

What was tied test 1986? without Kapil's 100 there would be no tied test.Hirwani's debut test was again won by Kapil with his bat.

Look at Lord's test in 1982, Kapil would have scored fastest 100 if he did not have to shield Doshi and tail.

Sometimes players have to be understood not just looking at stats.Stats don't give complete picture.

Stats show  Samerveera having better avg than Gordon Greenidge. But Samerveera is not even in same ball park as a batsman as Greenidge.

So if Kapil played in place of Jadeja , India would have won lot more matches in SENA.Kapil would be effective in India too.

Did Kapil scored 500 runs in an away series? Or even 400 runs? He doesn’t have a 400+ score in any given series let alone home or away.

His runs per innings is behind below names:- Botham, Jadeja, Imran, Cairns, Flintoff. Fact is he would have done well if he played in a strong Indian team but in the 80s, his careless batting approach didn’t helped India. He was excellent till 1983 with the bowl but went downhill post that. With bat, he was audacious but always inconsistent.

You don’t have awareness of the game and want to stay delusional hence can’t back your illogical arguments.

He played so many 5-6 matches series in Test cricket and yet doesn’t have a single 400 run series. That tells us about his actual performance with bat. He was an inconsistent test batsman capable of playing audacious knocks every now and then. That’s it. With bowl, he was superb till 1983. But lost the bite beyond that. Great player but not invincible by any stretch.

It’s very common in cricket to associate attacking batsmen as game changers or player who can win game single-handedly and defensive players are ones who need help of others.

But I haven’t seen that to be case in test case when it comes to actual performances.

He rarely took responsibility as batsman and batting was more of lottery for the team.
