Im going to ignore picking a T20I team as its irrelevant for 2023, here is my best team for the ODI given the squad, which means I dont have to pick all the uncles.

Rohit Sharma (C),

Ishan Kishan (wk),

Shubman Gill,

Suryakumar Yadav,

Shreyas Iyer,

Hardik Pandya (VC),

Washington Sundar,

Kuldeep Yadav,

Mohd. Siraj,

Umran Malik,

Arshdeep Singh.

Hitman captain. He obviously plays if he is not injured.

5 quality batsmen + Sundar, I do have faith that at least one of the top 6 batsmen can go big and score big.

5 bowlers + Pandya, again here there is various wicket taking options be it pace or spin.

KIshan our wicketkeeper, means I dont have to pick KL and it means we can leave Kohli out.

Can you guys please challenge me and or tell me a better team that India can field given the squad?

I think I have the batting order right. Mind you I loved what Hitman did vs Bangla coming late down the batting order, I would be happy for Gill and and Kishan to open and have Hitman come in before or after Pandya.

Should Chahal or Axar be in the team ahead of one of the spinners?

Thakur's batting as regressed quickly.  Pot belly increased alarmingly.  Rightly dropped from all formats.  Happy with this.

This is part and parcel of Indian Cricket and in Indian society, the more wealthy a player/person becomes the directly proportional relationship to his pot belly when they are under the age of 40. After 40 most Indian men are pregnant.

Sure there is an exceptions but it holds the truth. Even SRT had a small pot belly in the 2000s onwards.

I tell my Australian friends, in India if you want to kidnap a rich kid, kidnap the one that is morbidly overweight, lol. At least that was the case in the 90s and 00s, not sure if its true in 2020s lol.

He needs to continue to make a mess of his keeping as he did a few times vs Bangla, once this becomes too costly, than his place in the side is judged on batting alone and his omission may come sooner.

within the given constraints (i.e., the selectors choice of 16), your team is good. mine is nearly the same, as follows:

Kishan

SKY --> it's tonk-tonk time

Gill

Rohit Sharma (c) --> since Fatman cannot be dropped, I'd rather have him play a consolidator kohli-type role

Iyer

Pandu

sundar --> use sundar as floater.

umran

kuldeep

shami --> even old man shami is better than arshdeep for ODIs

sachin didn't have a belly, but did get fatter overall later in his career. Brat is the only one who got skinnier over time.

indians love bellies, that's why they wanna acquire them so badly. this also explains why most indian outfits (and movies) bare navels so often.

I hope Bishnoi has a great IPL.

Who would he come in for? How many spinners should we have for the WC team?

I have Kuldeep and Sundar. He would have to putperform both of them and more importantly Sundar to get ahead as both are right hand bowlers.

Correct, thanks for that, I know he got fatter, but still acceptable, he didnt look morbidly obese. I thought he had a pot belly, but looking at his 2012 photos he didnt.

for WC, I don't know how many spinners we are allowed. these would be my 4 picks: jaddu [not a fan in LOIs, but he's quite balanced in both batting & bowling]; sundar (clutch player with lots of potential); kuldeep (our wicket-taking option); shahbaz (cover for jaddu; can bat in top 6 and bowl tidily)

Sacchu for someone who debuted in 1980s (!) did take decent care of his body. not saying he was a fitness/gym freak, but he was in relatively good shape till the end.

the biggest culprits were/are rohit, thakur, pant, raina, yuvi, and some others

BC.. Kishan should be in T20 and ODI and should play every match.

This is a very very underrated post.

Given we are only less than 9 months away from the WC, we need to ensure all the kids are playing as much ODI's as possible.

Sundar, Malik and Kishan must automatically play every ODI game from now onwards. You rest them by not playing them in the T20 cricket.

I would also play SKY and Iyer in every game. Give SKY many continuous games so he can develop his confidence in ODI's so that he can transfer his T20 skills to the ODI games.

Make no mistake, In subcontinental conditions, Kishan, SKY and Iyer are bona fide match winners and can give India the WC.

Of the three uncles I have more faith in Hitman over Kohli and KL.

Kishan, Gill, Iyer, Samson, SKY, pant, Pandu, Sundar would be a good lineup. wish all of them got chances, but we will instead suffer with dhawan (somehow he will return), rohit, brat, kela, manish paindu, etc.

Sachin's weight gain was fine, all things considering. I do think in the early 2000s when he had his tennis elbow injury he gained a few too many kilos when he was on the sideline which he did lose. I think thats where maybe I thought he had his little pot belly for a while.

Yuvraj was pregnant towards the end of his career.

IIRC wasnt he banging some Bollywood actress that when she dumped him, it effected both his batting and weight?

which one? I'd imagine there were quite a few of them post-2011 WC... not sure though, haven't kept up with the gossip

That batting line up of yours has 8 batsmen and importantly two that are genuine bowlers and covers the wicketkeeping position. This means we can pick the 4 best bowlers and ignore their batting ability.

If the 8 batsmen cant do the job, then we are going to lose and no batting from our bowlers at the end will save us.

However, Jaddu can overcome his injury and bowl well and come into the team, purely as a bowler, it means we bat all the way to 9. This would mean we would be as strong as England batting wise at least.

yes, I listed 8 of them, but only 7 should be selected [the choice should be conditions-based]. this will allow for 4 bowlers, of which one can be chosen to bat a bit.

The selection of the team has to be based on:

  1. Have the ability to reach 350+ to 400 when batting first. (assumes flat pitch) or chase any target given the depth in batting.
  2. Need openers to take advantage of powerplay to place pressure on the bowling side when they make bowling changes.
  3. Need middle order batsmen that can go big in the last 5 to 10 overs
  4. Wicket taking bowlers is an absolute must in the first 10 overs with the new ball.
  5. Need both a left and right hand fast bowling options
  6. Spinners both left and right that can take wickets in the middle order and also contain if required
  7. Bowler at the death that can contain a batting onslaught.
  8. Genuine fast bowler that troubles the batsmen and can bowl at 150+
  9. Wicket keeper that is 100% competent and can execute well taking spinners.
  10. A side that can genuinely field well and places pressure on batsmen.

  1. Kishan, Gill, Iyer, Samson, SKY, Pant, Pandya, Sundar, Jaddu
  2. Kishan Gill
  3. Pant, Pandya, Sundar Jaddu
  4. Malik Arshdeep
  5. Malik Arshdeep
  6. Sundar, Jaddu
  7. Arshdeep ???
  8. Malik
  9. Kishan/Pant
  10. Jaddu Pandya

This is the blueprint for India to win the 2023 WC.

I dont mind the approach as its outside the box thinking.

I agree with Fatman coming later down the order or to anchor an innings if things go shaky. This is fine, its not fine when you play Kohli and KL and all three of the uncles want to be anchors.

If Jaddu is fully fit and is bowling well, I would have him in the team.

We need to be picking bowlers who are in form at the time of the WC.
