Average matters very little at his position.He is one the best allrounders from England , he is one of their better spinners too.

 

5 100s and 15 50s in 67 tests for number 6 or number 7 is very good return.

 

There is nothing mediocre about his career.

ofcourse it matters. He's neither consistent nor impactful. His spin didn't make any impact on India tours,was played easily.

 

1/4 of his innings are in top 5.  3000 runs after 118 innings despite that is not good.

How the * does Oz/Eng/NZ regularly get way with bowling less than 90 overs in a day! Eng 2021 away series IIRC they were short of their quota at least 3-4 times in 4 tests, NZ bowled 2-4 overs less at Kanpur 4th day, similarly OZ numerous times, how the * does BCCICC not punish them with regular penalties
