Pakistan’s volleyball team has potential, need to invest in them.

Potential to be good at Asian level, at best. High school teams from Brazil, Cuba, USA etc will fancy their chances against Pak men. There is a reason i don't get excited when we do well in sailing, rowing, athletics, swimming in Asian Games or TT, badminton, shooting, wrestling, weightlifting in CWG. We aren't dominant in any of these sports....come the Olympics, the East Asians will sweep TT, badminton, diving etc. and goras, blacks will sweep athletics, swimming, rowing, sailing etc. Not to forget we don't face USA and many of the European powerhouses in any of these games.

Same with football, even if we improve by leaps and bounds, simply don't see us reach anywhere close to elite level in my lifetime.

So many random countries do better than most of our neighbors...

It's shameful how unathletic the subcontinent really is.  Poverty alone cannot be the reason.

Only thing going for them is uncontrollable population.

No sports culture unfortunately. In the west sports culture grew organically, in places like China, Iran and Cuba the state took measures.

The Asian level would be a start. Got to start somewhere. Atm there is no infra and nobody is playing any of these sports.

Want Pak to do well in hockey, one sport where I have soft corner for them.

Is Hockey popular in india at the grassroots level. In pakistan ive never seen anyone play the sport in the cities. The only reason cricket is popular at the grassroots is due to tape ball. Even hard ball cricket isnt played by too many. Cricket will continue to survive due to tape ball, wonder how hockey can be made popular amongst the masses.

Uzbeks, Kazakhs too have adopted that Soviet/Chinese mindset/policy.....take talented children away from parents and train them from a young age. Reason why they overachieve. Even in chess, same story, the old Soviet way.

Pretty sure same scene will be playing out in North Korea, Mongolia and the other 'stans' (though not as impressive as UZB, KAZ).

I mean Indonesia and Malaysia have combined 350-400 million people and they don't win anything at Olympics level apart from badminton. Philippines has won only 1 Olympic gold in its history. Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia together have 0 Olympic medals in their history. @Lone Wolf even the SE Asians are bad. At least India, Pakistan have achieved greatness in 2 global sports, cricket and hockey for extended periods of time.

Only in rural Punjab, Odisha and one or two centres in Jharkhand, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh. In most states interest is too low, basically we are being carried by Punjab and the tribal belt of central/east India.

Heard about a couple of cities/towns being the hubs of hockey in Pak....Sialkot? Sargodha?

Anyway most of Pakistan's sporting success stories (hockey, squash, cricket) are because of Nur Khan. Your hockey achievements especially owe a lot to him, in fact the sport itself owes a lot to him. He also built so many astro turfs in Pak, India overtook that number just 10 years ago....that's how great Pak's hockey infrastructure was once upon a time. Remember Dhanraj's interview in Sportstar in the early 00s when he said his rivals in Pak were earning 10 times the money he was making that time.

That's a good point about autocratic regimes also the rigid system of local government to centre is so perfect for nurturing talent, even USA could not beat prime USSR. Only the US collegiate system comes close imo.

I am against torturing young 5 year olds through rigorous training for the sake of bragging rights at these events.

Culture is always a factor in some ways... Cuba with no resources & no money produces Best boxers.

Team sports could actually improve though...  We are built for it naturally.

Sports like Rugby,  volleyball should be encouraged more at grassroots I think.

Can't speak for all of India, but Hockey has 0 popularity in Mumbai and most places in India that I have been to.

Never seen anyone play hockey. I always thought hockey stick sales were driven by Bollywood in the 80s and 90s where the goons would invariably carry hockey sticks.

Women shooters have lived up to their billing. Hopefully Manu maintains her lead and wins a gold as well shortly.

Men's skeet team in bronze position atm.

The lady who won bronze choked on her last shot to win silver to the Chinese lady. Pity.

Yes, silver was there for the taking...she just had to shot normally in 10.0-10.2 range to win the silver but she choked.
But, good effort overall.
