Maybe he is not captaincy material (too early to conclude either way), but geez guys, I just looked at the score and he is batting at SR 167.  He is one of those guys who sticks around a bit and then hits out. As an opener having one guy like that and one guy hit from Ball 1 is not a bad thing. And that's what we have with Jaiswal and Gaikwad.

He was 21(21) at one point; these kind of make up innings Rohit, Kohli and even Rahul do it in their sleep. Don’t see anything new here. As I said good fringe player and backup but calling him main X1 or captaincy material is a joke

There is nobody in INdia who can win you the world cup.. NOBODY!

doesnt mean you can't try.

you do your best and then its out of your hands.

you fail, you improve on it.

we have tried consolidators and "good batsmen" for a while. while that is good enough for winning asia cups against inferior teams and make the KOs, just not able to cross that.

WI/Eng won their titles with all rounders and sloggers.

Arent they trying the "other" players in this series?

If fans arent satisfied with a 100(52)* innings, when two wickets have fallen for next to nothing and ball is swinging then there is no one in the whole country who can win you the world cup.

Better you consult astrologers and selected best 11 per day depending on their janam kundli.

no one is saying he is a bad player but he has basically got kohli's consolidator spot.

backups are important as well.

KL Rahul plays these innings in his sleep and don’t want him in T20 (as a keeper-bat maybe)

True, but Gaikwad is just starting his career. He seems to have some skills and will only improve. KLR is on the wrong side of the hill and, after so many years, we know what we have in him. He's not going to improve that much more.

Guys like Gaikwad etc. can still improve. Their range of strokes can widen. Their confidence can increase. Will it all happen? No one knows. But, right now, I'd rather have him than, say, Prithvi Shaw.

And none of this means he is guaranteed a spot. Or that he is a long-term answer. Again, no one knows.

If he starts to falter, his feet must be held to the fire and someone should be ready. But for now; today; he ended up with a SR of 215 and you can't expect too much more. No need to outright dismiss him.
