30 year old left arm spinner from UP.

Is a more orthodox type instead of a darter like Jadeja/Axar....can bat as well.

Good player at domestic level, need to see how he performs on the big arena.

For Tests in India, I place a higher rating on proven Ranji Trophy players that have topped batting or bowling over the current Indian players.

there is no correlation that the top scorers in Ranji will do as well as international cricket- while i agree red ball domestics should be the parameter for sel3ction, its just a fact that the quality that Ranji itself produces cant compete at international now ( im talking about this generation). Unless Sarfaraz magically sets the scene in fire in Tests not just in India but in Aus/Eng too then im happy yo be proven wrong

Gill, Iyer were also proven Ranji players before they played Tests

Not really, the likes of Pujara/Rahane had enviable records in Ranji over multiple seasons before they were selected for India - Pujara avg above 60(?) while Rahane close to 70 IIRC. Gill/Iyer didn't play as long & Iyer didn't have the same set of numbers backing him up! Rahane has been a major disappointment in this record because of his poor numbers in India, if he could score more/consistently he'd probably  never have been dropped as early as he was. Ideally at least one of Pujara/Rahane or Kohli should've played this series. Fat arse is well & truly cooked at this level, he's in no way fit or befitting of a captain :whack2:

Iyer had played around 50 FC games scoring at 50 average and SR 70. Thats not a small sample.

Gill played less but did very well whatever he did. Was fast tracked due to potential just like Pant and now Jaiswal.

Heck even Vihari had tremendous FC record before playing Tests. It means nothing much. Jaddu's triple tons tell you everything about Ranji level.

True and their careers were very good initially.

But they rarely play now, thats the big issue. When was the last time they played several Ranji games in a row? Years ago.

Youre missing the big issue here they are rarely play now.

When was the last time they played several Ranji games in a row or even close to a full season? Years ago.

Its why we must look at Ranji players, they face better spinners than this English team.

That's a form issue not a skill issue. Gill,Iyer have done well in Ranjis before.

I support the selection of top Ranji players on principal basis but they have not proven anything yet at intl level.

Youre missing the most pertinent point that Im raising its about current recent experience, which Gill and Iyer dont have.

Picking the best current playing Ranji batsman would be a good start.
