Mcgrath is the director now. I think MRF pace academy should have zonal branches. South/East/North/Central/West. This way small town boys from north and other parts can go there. In this day and age getting a sponsor is not that hard. But still having in the neighborhood wil increase the chances.

Good initiative after so many years by MRF pace foundation, atleast they are trying something different this time.

 

The problem has been and always will be how to get these bowlers play for their domestic sides. There has never been a plan between MRF and BCCI/State boards.

 

MRF got popularity between early 90s and early 2000s, bcci started accepting MRF as an organization which was helping in development of fast bowling talent, they were sending them Aus too.

 

When MRF pace foundation first started there was huge reluctance and disliking to some extent towards MRF pace foundation from BCCI as it was thought MRF would run a parallel cricket structure.

 

So initially when MRF  would ask state boards to send them their bowling talent , boards would send these random player, where Sachin and Gangly went as well.

Yes they have taken credits for some bowlers who would have a 15-20 day visit , but It was a good place for fast bowlers where they could have learnt and applied the skills. Remember this was the time when there was no support to the bowlers and nothing at all for fast bowlers.

 

Since IPL came in it provided stage to the player which can not be compared to MRF they had no way to provide any kind of platform, they were happy that they were getting bowling talent from Ind and local boards were helping them with it.

And now that each IPL team has their own scouting team and training centres its hard for MRF to find the bowling talent to join their camps.

Before IPL if  any bowler would make it to MRF camps was v.sure of making an Ind debut which was a big thing before IPL came to being. Media would cover who is selected and who impressed the coaches who was going to Aus.

 

It would be hard for MRF to have multiple centres as they are competing with IPL teams and their camps and training centres now and plus NCA. No point of having a separate place where there is already BCCI academy. Small city/town are not viable options due to various issue logestics , travel , etc

The quickest pacer of this venture, Jaskaran Singh, bowled a fastest of 145 k. And he does not look that tall.

 

An odd delivery at 145 k, at age 20, does not seem that special these days.

 

It would ofcourse be different if he can go upto 148 k / 150 k in a year or two or bowl with high skills at 140 k+.

Maybe helped with tweaking a few things for all these guys. Nothing wrong with that and that may be their niche, but it doesn't match the hype!

But SRT started playing FC as a batsman for Mumbai when he was 14 or 15, and made his intl debut as a 16 year old. So when did he attend MRF pace academy? Surely not after he broke into the Mumbai team as a batsman, or after making his intl debut. And before that he would be too young (13 or so), and don't think MRF pace academy is meant for kids (u-15, u-13 etc.) IMO it must be some other training or preparatory camp for Ranji trophy.

During his teens, Sachin Tendulkar wanted to be a Fast bowler.  He had great passion for fast bowling. 

 

Went to MRF Pace Academy during its early days. Lillee was in charge then and said that he can't be a fast bowler due to his lack of height and send him back. 

 

We saw Tendu bowl some seam up stuff in the early 90s and he could swing the ball big and extract some bounce too.  (  and he turned his leg spinners more than Warne ). He was insanely talented as a cricketer.

MRF pace academy gave us Bharat Arun and TA Sekhar, the best fast bowling coaches in the country. Both learned from Lillee, the father of modern pace bowling. 

 

It is equally important to create good fast bowling coaches, and Bharat Arun should have a big role in Indian cricket.

Btw look how keen our earlier gen players were to improve their secondary skills. Ganguly also took his bowling very seriously and toiled in domestic. Rohit and Kohli are bloody selfish.

Good point. T.A.Sekhar was one of the earliest discovery. But he never lasted long. But pretty good fast bowling coach.

He was a mentor to Bharat Arun. Remember a wonderful essay about MRF academy on Wisden. They actually dared to do something good for Indian cricket in the dark 90s. Ahead of their time.

He was a pretty good leg spinner, and turned the ball a mile. Recall him winning a MOM against Aus as a bowler where he took 5 wkts. Also, recall this googly to Moin Khan... he could've been a very good spinner if he had focused on it
