We would've lost the 99 series but the poor decisions clearly targeting SRT left a poor taste in the mouth. They didn't need to do it. However, 2008 series is when they really came into their own as they could've lost the series without umpires' intervention. The Denness case in SA is the straw which broke the camel's back. That racist @$$hole banned the player playing his 1st Test match (Sehwag) for over-appealing. And you used to get likes of Donald abuse you to your face for mins without any punishment.

 

These 2 incidents - Sydney and the Mike Denness one - is what made BCCI give no phucks and start pulling their weight. They finally figured it out that Western/gora bloc wouldn't respect you no matter what and you had to fight them no matter what.

Do Indian coaches at grassroot level discourage innovation ? Do selectors give too much importance to being technically correct and not effective ? Or players lack the drive to innovate ?

 

Pretty much this. A batsman like sky is an exception rather than the norm as an eg, completely self taught. Most Gymkhana cricket coaches will make you do laps as punishment if you bat like he dies or don't play textbook shots. Indian batsmen not playing sweep is also due to grassroots coaching.
