bharathh Posted August 10, 2024 Author Posted August 10, 2024 Another person I really appreciate is Mirabai Chanu. She tried to go for Silver instead of just going for bronze. She couldn't make her final lift and so ended up 4th - but she is another with a winner's mentatily. Just didn't have the physicality to win this time. We need more weightlifters like her. Gollum Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 Indians whining over javelin silver and hockey bronze is both pathetic and pleasing at the same time. This is what Americans, Aussies do when their swimming favorites don't win gold. You must see their meltdown on SM. Pathetic because all athletes are humans, and winning an Olympic gold is not a birthright, other beasts as well. Luck too plays a role. Everyone gives their best. Pleasing because at least in a couple of events we have set the bar so high that not winning gold is seen as a failure. Kron, randomGuy and Frustrated 2 1
Number Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 Unreal choke by Japanese in TT. Leading 9-5 in gold medal match first match. Gave it away 5-11.
bharathh Posted August 10, 2024 Author Posted August 10, 2024 The new batch of women wrestlers look exciting for the future. I hope the men catch up as well. Really hoping they don't fade away. They have overperformed in this event even though we only have 1 medal so far. Stlil expecting one from Reetika tomorrow. Still - these girls look good for success if they continue. I really hope that the govt *s off from the WFI and it is run professionally. Unfortunately with the Haryana govt - either Cong or BJP - both will not leave the federation alone. Kron and Gollum 1 1

Mirabai Chanu's season best was 184 kg. When it mattered she did 199 kg (just 2 kg shy of her Tokyo silver winning efforts). That too when wasn't at 100% due to periods. Amazing champion. Anybody who performed above season best or made new national record, must be appreciated, even if medal eluded them. randomGuy, Number and Kron 2 1

IMO, hockey team beyond my wildest expectations. I doubted they would make it out of the group at the beginning. I really hope we identify ppl for weightlifting and other field events. I really think we should have ppl for discus throw, hammer and shot put. Field - we are slowly improving.. but in these events I think we can really get better quick. Need the right talents (not just one) and keep improving them at all costs. Gollum 1
Gollum Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 I seriously believe we can become the best freestyle wrestling nation in a couple of decades time.

Like I said she could have just added 1kg on her last attempt to go for Bronze. But she added 3 kg to try for Silver. She went for a better medal instead of settling. Gollum 1

That was the hope after London when we won those 2 medals and then in Tokyo as well. We need ppl like Sushil Kumar though. Get the thugs in and give them a productive outlet for their aggression. I think in terms if strength or talent we are not behind. Just consistency and mental fortitude. Tbh, Bajrang was also awesome. Too bad he threw away his sporting career for politics. Number 1

However, the politician asshats will ruin everything.
deathmonger Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 In 20 years time Hockey, Cricket, Shooting, Wrestling - Top class, gold medal contenders Badminton, Archery - Decent, can win a gold If TT, Boxing, Athletics keep pace plus we open up some new stuff (Judo, Taekwondo, Gymnastics, Rock climbing etc. Swimming etc look tough for now but even there maybe a few) can be a solid 30-40 medals, 10-12 golds team in the 2040s
