He was already playing 3 formats when Dravid took over. Played WT20 2021, Test series in England and was part of middle order in ODIs

He is/was never good enough, giving him chances hoping that he becomes core player in 2017/18 and now are two different things. I can understand him getting chances then but not now. That is why Gambhir needed to tell him Pant is back, so you are sitting down. It's also true that he was never bad enough. His performance was always borderline, just enough to keep him in. It happens every overseas tour. He scored a warrior innings in first test. Follows it with single digit scores. In T20 though, he used to be the master. Faded off and got dropped. Nothing questionable about ODI performance though. Plays a tough role and nails it. Edited August 9, 2024 by Chakdephatte

India got all out for 54 when Sanath Scored 189. Did it mean Sachin and could not play both spin and fast bowling. Why are people overreacting for couple of losses. SL played well and won, no need to dissect it more .They are allowed to win sometimes. The problem is the coach, why did he not play Harshit even in one match, other than that there is nothing wrong in losing the series. Problem was playing spin well . Bringing in a pacer would have changed the outcome or made an impact on outcome ????. Identify the root cause who did not play spin well. All so called stars who did not play lot of spin in longer format in lats 3-4 years have lost the ability to play quality spin now - Be it Rohit (take out his runs against pacers) , Kohli,Iyer, KL ,Pant , Gill etc. That is where the problem lies. The players who are regularly playing in domestic long formats play spin much better than these stars. This was the reason we won ENG series recently - due to young batters like Jaiswal, Sarfraz, Jurel . We would have lost if our stars played . But this is a tricky situation -we need to also be ready for a good or bouncy track . Management should assess the pitch conditions for any big tournament and select team accordingly . For eg. If CT happens on low and a bit of spin friendly pitches then your pool should include 2-3 players from current domestic players ( look at jaiswal, Rinku, Parag, Sai, Jurel ) . So against a side like BD, SL, AFG you better play these guys rather than Kohli, Iyer, Gill etc. Against pace heavy teams you change the personnel to have better players of pace & bounce than better players of spin. BTW for WI WT20 selectors assessed the conditions and selected a better balanced team for such situations though it might not have been an ideal team of 15. tweaker 1

Playing spin well in one series does not make young players good batsman of spin and playing one series or two series bad vs spin does not make seniors bad vs spin.As batsman start playing international cricket, their exposure to playing spin decreases as most them are gearing to play fast bowling. We had Gabba Syndrome here for couple of years.Where Sundar was deemed to be top order batsman better than any top order currently playing. Second thing, you cannot have two sets of players. You need to have balance between playing spin and fast.Select the best out of them.If they don't work you give chances to new players. The conditions in this series have been tough, even in t20 series it could have gone either way here. There were no seniors in t20 series in SL too. People need to stop making players who are not playing into something they are not also.
