What we learned from the SL ODI series

I would say the ODI series against SL served its purpose and we learned a few hard truths...

1. Rohit can continue for 1-2 years in ODIs as he was our best bat.

2. Jaiswal needs to be brought into the ODI team ASAP. Jaiswal is our best all-format bat at the moment and deserves to bat ahead of likes of Gill, Kohli, Rahul, Iyer etc.  And given the next WC is 3 years away, not sure Rohit can play till then and Jaiswal needs to be in the setup.

3. Kohli is done and don't think he's interested anymore. He sat out the Eng Test series before IPL, took a break after IPL and didn't play any WT20 warm ups, was carried during WT20, and here he looked like a passenger.

4. Gill doesn't deserve automatic selection in any format. Jaiswal deserves the spot more in ODIs and Abhishek is a better T20 opener. Gill shouldn't be a Captain or VC and making him an all-star batsman is a blunder.

5. Siraj is not a white-ball bowler. He should be played in Tests but is not meant for T20s and ODIs. And now even his favorite opponent has figured him out. Harshit needs to be tried ahead of him. Even likes of Nattu or all-rounders like Nitish Reddy and Venky Iyer would be preferable. Hopefully we get Mayank fully fit so him and Harshit can support Bumrah, Shami and Pandya.

6. Bumrah and Pandya, probably along with Shami, have been the real MVPs of the team. It's more than clear who has been carrying this team. You can shyte on Pandya all you want but he along with Bumrah are the MVPs for the team.

7. Kuldeep should stick to Tests. He has been out-bowled by likes of Sundar, Parag, Axar in white-ball cricket. Better to play likes of Abhishek and Rinku in shorter formats so you at least have a deeper batting lineup.

8. Dube is not intl level. We should thank him for his role in WT20 final but it's becoming apparent he's too limited. He can't play pacers and is a walking wkt on turning pitches. We don't want a player to hit average spinners on flat wkts on 65m boundary grounds. Someone like Rinku has a much better game to bat at 5 than Dube.

9. Given the next WC is in SA, need to give chances to Nitish Reddy and Venky Iyer. The days of one-dimensional players are over, and we need a backup for Pandya as a seam based all-rounder. Both Nitish and Venky should be brought in the setup similar to how Parag, Axar, Sundar have been brought in as spin all-rounders. We need to add depth for both pace and spin all-rounders.

10. It should be the end of road for KL Rahul. And even Iyer has to be on very thin ice.

Posted

1. Our ability to play spin is worse than England or SA.

2. Without Bumrah & Shami our fast bowling is zilch.

3. We don't have any backups (atleast in the eyes of selectors). For point no 2, replacement is Avesh & Mukesh.

4. Jaiswal has to be there in top 2 of this team. No matter who is crucified for him.

Good points.  But sadly it's not a question of what we(fans) feel & observe.  We play no role in team selection.   Going by past, what we all know is that Seniors like Chokli Iyer Kela etc would continue playing no matter how many times they fail.  Same with Gill (who has been around for 3+ yrs.  But is just a useless stat padder like Kela. His avg is highly inflated due to triple centuries against Zim).     Of course this is a discussion forum. We can discuss as much as we want.  But neither Gambhir nor Rohit nor any influencer visits this forum.

Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, and Dhruv Jurel should be given an extended run in ODIs. Pant and KL Rahul should be completely discarded.

Pant should be given chances. He only got one game. Jurel should be around as not too sold on Samson and Kishan.

Don't take bilaterals too seriously.

0-2 doesn't hurt. What hurts is we didn't try out more youngsters in the games.

Same issue with me. Even if you beat them 3-0 you gain nothing out of this series anyway. So why not try youngsters.

Bilterals act as a warning sign for any glaring issues which might be creeping through the cracks.

Next steps should be to learn through these issues and then make necessary corrections.

We are tactically very very poor. You assess the conditions select the team accordingly. play accordingly.  Pitch reading continues to be alarmingly poor. We lost world cup final because of that.

We didn't take either the T20s or Odis that seriously imo.

If someone is a new bowler experimenting makes sense. We know about Siraj.  Right from the start it was a lose-lose series. Even if we win we gain nothing from it with full strength side. So they should have tried Harshit and see how he responds.

It's not the defeat. It's the manner of defeat. Including WC 2023 final, we have performed the exact same way across 4 ODIs now. It's a huge red flag and sign of concern.

Other than Rohit none of our batsmen is good enough to take initiative or play spin. We depend on our bowlers way too much to save our @sses.

Newer players with a point to prove would have played with more intensity. I saw it with Parag today. Everyone else goes through motions.

we learnt that we need optimum conditions to perform well..

1- good pace bowling conditions..our batters struggles

2- good spin conditions our batters struggle

3- flat tracks our bowlers struggle

now we should bribe every groundsmen in the world and prepare track that is neither too flat..nor too spinning nor too pace bowling assistance...

selectors\TM thought process wont change..so lets change the pitches..

SL never batted 2nd..they breathe and drink such kind of wickets..so they are supposed to have better combination..but we could have atleast tried Harshit rana too..min 2 matches both for Rana and Parag..and Jswal should have been in the squd too..to given chnaces..
