People have a bigger problem with co-ethnic hiring in publicly traded corporate environments. No one bats an eyelid when owner Patel hires neighbor Patel to work at Patel Brothers grocery store, but there are concerns when Sharma at IBM hires too many Bhatias, because IBM isn't Sharma's small business.

I think there is a strong tendency toward community-based hiring in some places in Canada. I have seen several personal examples, a Gujarati manager at my neighbourhood Walmart who appeared to primarily hire Gujaratis, a Punjabi manager at Tim Hortons who mostly hired Punjabis and a Telugu manager at another chain who seemed to favour people from his own community. These are only my personal observations but they have contributed to that impression.

When I came to Canada a decade ago, many of these entry-level jobs were commonly held by Canadian youth, some as young as 15. Today, outside of places like Starbucks, it feels like much of the retail and fast-food workforce has shifted toward Indian workers in the 20–40 age range.

Disproportionate hiring happens in every community in every industry. Anyway even the management are fine with this practice as Indians are generally obedient, disciplined, calm and mind their own business.

Yeah this is totally unfair but this is how the world functions. It will be even more shocking if you know what happens in India. Most people don't acknowledge their privilege of having good support networks.

I think the general feeling is that co-ethnic hiring is okay for small mom-and-pop type ventures with mostly blue-collar hiring (which probably dominates the stats in the paper you shared).

But it is considered unethical in a corporate environment, where a hiring-manager of a certain ethnicity does not own the venture, but is part of a bigger structure and is expected to conduct stringent process-based hiring.

any tom dick & harry, can take a pic or video of you from social media, make up a story about you, they will take it as a legitimate complaint & investigate you, while thanking the person who lied about you. That guy made an elobarate story about the girl being on Visa since 2014 & gamming the system. The US attorney thanked him for lying!

You can say a million bad things about dems & biden, but they never made you apprehensive about just existing. Now, every person of Indian origin will be watching over their backs.

If you are abroad, I say again. Have a hedge in India. Post world war liberal order is going to be over soon. It is going to get considerably localized and stressful. Trump and MAGA are only symptoms. The economic stress and populism will cause significant othering.
