Pragg's WC run last year was sensational.

 

Eliminated Nakamura, Arjun, Caruana back to back and lost steam by the time his final against Carlsen came. Again remember, Pragg beat Carlsen in classical in Norway this year. Don't write him off. His ceiling is sky high.

Let us see how Kasparov reacts. Was always very proud of his youngest world champ record, and tbh beating Karpov in 1985 was one of the GOAT feats.

India has always been blessed with great minds, integrity has always been an issue.

 

Forget far east, we are yet to achieve civic sense of Sri Lanka.

 

It is Indians that built Dubai.  Everything that makes Dubai looks like a sci fi city and far better than anything in the far east  is -- Indian civil engineers, Indian architects and Indian laborers.

 

What prevents us from doing it in our own country ? The babudom, the corrupt politics...etc...it will go one day..maybe not entirely but to a significant extent.

It is much easier to be gracious when one has achieved the topmost of something or realized his/her potential. 

 

But what makes these two guys special is despite their underachievement, perennial second place finishes, bad luck, whatever you call it, they don't appear bitter. So easy to cross the river and behave like Nepo. They have maintained grace even in tough times. For someone like Aronian, not even paying a title match must sting a lot when lesser players have done it.....shows the class of the man.

Till circa 2012, I always thought Aronian would take the crown from Anand, not Carlsen. His non stop chokes in candidates has been tough to take as a chess fan. Used to play like a world champ in supertourneys and melt away in candidates.....every single time. At least he led Armenia to 3 Olympiad gold medals in those 10-12 years.

Fabiano was a monster at his peak --- Carlsen could not win a single classical game against him in 2018 world championships and had to rely on tiebreaks. 

 

BTW, Carlsen could not win the classical format  against Karjakin either in 2016 World Chess championship either.

 

I remember Aronian used to get the better of Vishy alot, when Vishy was still active in the circuit.

 

As far as Nepo is concerned, this clip sums up all you need to know about Nepo.  Just look at his expressions in the end.

Dubai civil engineers and architects were mostly British/Americans. India's best exports are world class computer scientists to the US. I dare say that our top computer science talent is easily on par with that of Russia and China.

 

But the general population has a looonnnggg way to go. India will become developed, but not in our lifetime.

Never had the chance to follow chess that seriously but even I knew an indian becoming the world champion in chess(at least in classical) again was just a matter of time. Congrats to Gukesh
