Since Hindu marraige requires Havan, Yagna etc, to avoid, conflicts with Muslim rulers, our ancestors in north India started performing marraiges in night --- and from their on it took the form of culture. While in South hindus you can still see the marraiges in broad daylight!
hmm thats interesting. but in north INdia, mostly SIkh Families follow the trend of having marriages in the morninng or around noon time.. thats like in 90% sikh families i reckon

Man you need to revisit scriptures..... Abhimanyu is son of Subhadra and Arjun.......He was married to Uttara Virat king's daughter
I made a typo. In general it seems North Indian Hindus dont marry their cousins. However, if you look in the scripture you will find a few rare cases of cousin marriage amongst the Kshatriya Kings eg. Arjun married Subhadra, His First Cousin and the Sister of Lord Krishna. Also, Arjun's Grandson, Maharaj Pariksit (Son of Abhimanyu) also married his first cousin. But it seems these instances were quite rare and only done amongst royalty for political reasons. (while the muslims do this generation after generation....).

Actually, you can find examples of Kings, marrying in relations!...But that cannot be considered as "DHARMIC" practice. Atharva Veda and Manu-Smriti in Hinduism are considered as source for Marriage rules. They both prohibit Incest marraige as "adharma".
I dont agree with cousin marriages, find it quite disgusting. But back in the days previous to Kali Yuga it seemed to occur and was accepted (Very rare instances). Lord Krishna himself allowed his sister to marry Arjuna, Lord Krishna himself. There is no higher authority than that. The kshatriyas may have done this for political reasons We dont need to do that nowadays, there's enough women to choose from in the world, why pick your cousin???? Oh yeh, the Pakistani community has the highest Infant mortality rate in the UK, from generations of inbreeding.

One of my colleague a telugu reddy an otherwise quiet brilliant smart guy when being confronted with this issue in a cordial manner by a swiss colleague burst into routine of " You guys sleep with your mother.." credit to the swiss guy who without taking much offence over the words said only very crazy ones, once in a while do such things..

Cousin marriage is very common even in Telugu communities. Only we (at least the educated ones) dont do it now because we know the genetic implications. I have grown up with my aunts saying that if I was born a girl, I'd have prolly married my cousin :D All jokey, of course, but still people don't consider it taboo. As far as swiss and mothers, I thought russians were the pioneers :D

Oh, and also, the arranged marriage system was cleverly conceived by parents who found out that their kids just didnt have the mojo to attract the opposite sex. I honestly believe this :D

You are missing the point here.. for instane stealing is crime and people still steal.. it's not the same as decriminalization of stealing by some constitution.. yes few exceptions are there where hindus do indulge in first cousin marriage but that's immoral as per hindu scripture.. otoh this same event has religios sanction in islam..

How do you think Islam has spread so much? Islam encourages: 1: No family planning (have as many kids as possible) 2: Using condom is haraam 3: upto 4 wives -- to ensure maximum no. of offsprings 4: Law that muslim men can marry non muslim girls and they will have to convert to islam, however Muslim girls CAN NOT marry a non muslim guy w/o the guy converting to islam 1st ....hence: the goal here is to preserve islam There are currently 250 million muslims in India ALONE! now add the muslims of bangladesh and pakistan together...since several yrs ago this was one giant country. so 250 million + 160 million(pak)+150 million (bd)= 560 million muslims in the region approx and growing. India has 800 million hindus....in next 25 yrs....indian muslim pop will grow to 300-350 million, Hindus will come down to 650... this is the reality.... 1st place to be muslim majority ...would be bombay since all hindu girls in bombay marry musilms anyway.... just look at tv and film industry. P.S.. I thought Imran's mother was married to a bong name Anil pal...but they divorced several years ago. In an interview...Imran said....his last name should be "pal" but since they divorced...he uses "khan" .....Imran's mother is married to Raj Zutsi

Ok i will change that to "most" if not all.... this is the most apparent truth out there...yet we tend to be "politically correct" and put a pardah on our eyes so that we don't get labeled islamophobic... sad.

This thread reminds me of an english movie that I saw on Star movies 10-12 years ago. I just saw the last 45 mins or so and the story was interesting. It was about a couple expecting their first child but they get to know that they are actually siblings. Their parents divorced years ago and they never knew about each others existence. The movie was about how the villagers wanted to kill them and how they managed to escape etc etc. It was a weird movie but was different !

..again, very exaggerated..infact, I can't even contemplate the fact that someone who knows the stats of hindu girls in Bombay and then cross checks them with all Muslim men in Bombay by just reading stuff in a magazine or TV channel Have you even lived in Bombay? Islamophobic ? What is that? You never had Muslim friends, you 21st century folks so freaky about having a Muslim friend? you label each and every one a killer?
