All their sports are better funded than India's. Moreover all these countries are producing MMA fighters, wrestling is an integral part of that. It is the most physically demanding sport in the world, technically even Indians lag behind Japan, Russia, Mongolia etc.

It can't be gained by working out. Either you have it or you don't. NZ Australia produce so many genuine quicks with such low population. I am talking about explosive strength, not brute strength. Don't confuse it with weightlifting.

Boils down to training, support system, domestic pitches, S&C, culture that encourages it. For our resources we should be doing much better.

deathmonger Posted August 4, 2025 Posted August 4, 2025 (edited) Correlation vs causation. Not a thing about "genes". Richer first world countries have better athletes simply due to: 1. Better diet (Issue in India is the people who can afford regular meat are mostly upper caste vegetarians and people who are non-vegetarians are Muslims/backward castes who tend to be poorer and cannot afford regular high quality meat) 2. Better ecosystem (infrastructure, supporting parents etc) 3. Things like "love marriages" where fit people make kids with each other. Lots of American etc athletes are kids of other athletes (who might not have made the big time) As India becomes richer, these things will keep getting solved. jalebi_bhai Posted August 4, 2025 Posted August 4, 2025 Don't think it is an issue of genetics. It is a bunch of other factors at play. 1. We value longevity over impact: A cultural problem to be honest (look at Indian politics). Rather than trying to create a culture where we keep producing impactful fast bowlers who will go at full tilt for 20-30 Tests, we settle for fast medium bowlers who get seduced by the carrot of playing 50+ Tests by just doing enough. The day we accept that express fast bowlers will inevitably break down, we can actually starting planning and building a sustainable pool of genuine fast bowlers. 2. Who/where are the Indian fast bowling mentors?: Bharat Arun, TA Sekhar have some sort of track record. Who else? Paras Mhambrey with the U19s 7 years back? There is a paucity of bona fide Indian mentors for our fast bowlers in domestics so who exactly are they going to learn from? 3. Non-Existent Skill vs Pace debate: Being able to consistently bowl fast is a skill in itself. Even Bhuvi/Unadkat can bowl one or two balls above 145. But being consistently quick requires a deep understanding of one's own anatomy and biomechanics plus the fitness to execute. Unfortunately, a few expensive spells of bowling later, we discourage our own bowlers from bowling quick. Even in T20s where variations like knuckle ball, chuckle ball, buckle ball etc are used, the best pace bowlers historically have been the likes of Malinga, Gul and Bumrah who were genuine quicks. Let's not compensate lack of pace with this chooran of being 'skillful' Long story short, it's not a talent problem. It's a talent management problem.

rollingstoned Posted August 4, 2025 Posted August 4, 2025 Fast bowling is as much about culture as genes. More I would say. You will always find a bunch of athletic lads who can bowl quick but you need a lot more to ensure they keep functioning at that level. Indians tend to value line and length while defaulting to cliches like 'faster it comes, faster it goes to the boundary'. This thinking is institutionalised.

The explosiveness you need there makes fast bowling look like child's play. Genes and all is overrated, at least in this sport. Our wrestlers are able to hang with the world's elite because of their discipline, willpower, hard work, capability to endure pain and suffering in their training sessions. Our cricketers are overpampered babies who are content with mediocrity, easy IPL money. And an army of coaches who keep telling them that they don't need to bowl fast and that speed is a liability. Trends from pre war era have no bearing on what is happening now, unless you wish to drive home a narrative.
