All format selection vs format-based selection

The obsession with all-format players and all-format captain is getting more annoying by the day.

Given that talent pool that India possesses, shouldn't there be format-based selection? The one poster-boy for Indian cricket doesn't allow for the best team to be selected for the respective format. The next gen has Gill, Jaiswal, Shreyas, Tilak who will all be the face of Indian cricket in the next 5-10 years.  While Gill had great success in England, it doesn't make sense for him to be groomed as all-format captain.

Ideally, most players should be kept to 2 formats to improve longevity of players. Even someone as fit and success-hungry as Kohli seemed to burn out with the pressure of performing across 3-formats and IPL.

I made a list of players and the formats that I think they should be playing. Except for Jaiswal, Bumrah and Kuldeep, there shouldn't be anyone playing all three formats.

However, based on current selection, Gill, Washington, Nitish and Harshit seem to be the all-format players. The only explanation is favoritism (Harshit and Nitish back by Gambhir) and Washi (back by Gill due to GT connection).

Any players that I have missed here? Some format-player assignments are debatable, but open to discussion.

India shouldn't be afraid of testing out every single option in one way or the other. We don't want to miss out a genuine match winners in the process. Washington sundar was unearthed accidentally. So India should find a way experiment every single guy as quickly as possible even if it means sending a completely new set of XI against lower ranked sides.

There will always be overlap between the players in 3 formats. But that will be v.specific to roles. Allrounders (specially fast bowling),wk, and pacer can/will feature in all 3 formats.

In the history of cricket there are not many fast bowling allrounders and when and in which ever them has a fast bowling allrounder finds themselves in better position compare to other team, they are force multiplier.

Wk will find crossover but now more and more teams are looking for fast scoring wk hence a batting skill are preferred over wk skills and most teams now play different wks in test and white-ball and some teams are moving to t20 specific keeper but a t20 wk can and will fit always fit the plans of odi sides.

Fast bowler yes, looking in to this history of t20 specialist fast bowler like hasrsal patel they donot last more than 2 years of intnl cricketer. They can be ok for leagues for not intnl level, such bowlers cannot make into any full strength side without decreasing the strength of the side. Only such bowler who has been successful over the years was bravo but he was a lo batter too and good hitter and there could have been period where he played as a pure batter in the team till he finds pitches that supports his kind of bowling .

For t20i need proper fast bowler who could bowl fast and have white-ball skills : yorkers, bouncers, slowerones ans slow bouncer. Thats the reason bowlers like boult, rabada, bhumra, hazelwood, starc, cummins etc have been successful over the years. Dibbly-dolly swing bowlers wont work in t20is

The biggest issue is batter and specially batter whose batting is not based on power game. A batter whose game is nt based on power will struggle in t20.

Test batting is based on good defence, self-preservation batting long time and not throwing bat when its not a bad ball. T20 batting is complete opposite of this.

if pitches are not dodgy how many times a team will require a batter who could hold-on , it will only happen if there is a collapse.

The trade off is what we are looking for here. So if you have a high but slow scoring batter what kind of trade of the team is okay with if the trade of avg of x strikerate points  for y average point. what is a good number of a team for x and y ??

Imo a test/all-format whn batter if needed should only come in t20 when there is specific role, like a team needs a good player of spin in mo. or some1 who can navigate through a brutal spell of a top fast bwler. but how often a brutal spell will come. Spin can occur often. but pace ...??

Players should not play more than 2 formats for India imo.

You can make a rare exception here and there but largely it shouldn't be encouraged.

They should play first class cricket and the one of the two white ball formats.

No exceptions should be made for fast bowlers who should be strictly restricted to 2 formats

The debate is about the batters, you need fast bowlers in t20 too with some white-ball skills mainly not to be predictable: Slowerones, slower bouncers.

A test fast bowler should be able to bowl yorkers and bouncers.

Its batter that causes the imbalance in the team.

Think the issue for boards is players donot want to play tests and specially exclusively test, once tagged as test batter the options are limited and the problm is mny.

A proper test batter will not make as much mny which a middling level t20 player can make playing the various t20 leagues.

There is only 1 solution to it bridge the gap between t20 batting and test batting. Like Aus and Eng are doing all are powerful hitters which works in t20s.

Does ind have powerful hitters ??--no.

Example of the issue that boards face can be visible with Pak and WI, till previous gen wi had so many intnl level t20 batters and v.few test batters and now they have hardly 1 good test batter.

Pak players specially bowler where bowlers are bigger stars than batters have given up on test the reason is same, they donot mind being dropped or nt picked for test but they prefer that way. because t20 and its mny.

As soon as these ppl are dropped from t20is their fan base/pr gets activated why same does not happen when they are dropped from tests ??
