Naah, nobody would be able to chase 360 in a WC final. Once the score went beyond 300 it was over.

Yup, par for the course by that team in ODIs. Kohli was great in T20 but his performances in knockouts in ODI tourneys were pretty poor. Plus we had Rahane in that team. Dhawan was the only one who could've won that match and when he was dismissed it was match over.

Atually 2015 attack was much superior. Johnson, Starc , hazlewood. More or less decent bowlers.  2003 had Lee, Mcgrath. pretty much it.    Bichel, Lehmann,  Brad hogg, SYmonds finished the rest of the overs. To be honest India were going  at  good rate 147/3 in 25 overs even without sachin. Then Sehwag run out ruined every thing. Another 10 overs from Sehwag game would have been much closer.

360 was too big a total. We should've batted first and put up a total and that was our best bet.

ya. But i exactly remember why they did lol They were terrified of Brett Lee running through top order first up . Brett Lee was in insanely terrifying form. He blew away both England and New zealand. Also India early.

But chasing against likes of Lee and McGrath would've been even more difficult due to scoreboard pressure. While batting first you can afford to take time but not while chasing. If it had been an overcast day or slightly green pitch, bowling first makes sense but not on a flat pitch.

In between 1998 Sharjah desert storm and 2007 ODI series dead rubber match in Mumbai, India didn't defeat Australia even once while chasing in ODIs. Not once !!!!!

 

All our wins came batting first, heck we couldn't chase 235 against them in Eden in 2003 TVS series finals, and their bowlers were Bracken, Brad Williams Bichel, Harvey, Symonds, Clarke....it was Harvey who destroyed us that day, 4/20. 

 

Even when we broke the curse in Mumbai, target was just 190 and we lost 8 wickets in the chase, we were reduced to 140/8 before Murali Karthik and Zaheer added a 50 runs partnership. This was a dead rubber against a B grade Aus attack. 

 

Ganguly made the most stupid decision imaginable in 2003 final. Sad part is we won the toss in 2003 WC F as well as 2023 WTC F. And made the wrong decision in both instances.

We batted first in the group stage match and got bundled out for 136 against Australia. I know we won the toss and chased in the final because of the chance of rain but you should always bat first in the final.

Lot of things changed between the group match and final. We were out of sorts coming to the WC, having been massacred in NZ (0-2 in tests, 2-5 in ODIs) just before. Then barely scraped past the Netherlands, got crushed by Aussies. Then our winning run started, with Zim I think, followed by Pak, SL, Eng, NZ. 

 

We should have been brave in the final.

Group stage and WC finals are two different things. In ODIS, bat first and put up a total on the board especially on flat pitches. And the group stage match happened on a bowler friendly wkt which was damp. Different conditions altogether.

Yup, the CT win against Aus in 1998 also came in when we batted first. Against Aussies or better bowling attacks, bat first and put up a total.

Our chasing only improved in the Chappell era, and we also had peak Dhoni, Yuvi, Raina by then. 

 

We were a good chasing team in early 80s, then terrible for the next 20-25 years, probably worst in the world. Was a mental block for us, like 4th innings chases are right now.

Our chasing improved when Dhoni broke through. Before that we had likes of Nayan Mongia, Vijay Dahiya, Saba Karim type of wk averaging around 20 and our tail started with 4 wkts down. Dhoni added steel to the lower order. And along with Yuvraj and addition of Raina, they could chase without panicking.
