Norman Posted June 13 Posted June 13 Iyer played a crucial role in 3 out of the 4 knockouts he has been in. He is one of the few mentally clutch players we have in our ODI setup. Gollum 1

They lost both matches there and also in CT and again in t20 finals. Yes, good run against them. Just hope we see a change in fortunes in tests. They are 6-1 against us in tests in 2020s. Whitewashed us both home and away, and the WTC final. I refuse to believe they are better than Aus, RSA, Eng in tests that we struggle so much against them.

Not even Hanuma vihari had they batted 107 balls against rubbish bowling in Indain conditions all of them batted the same way, Virat came in early and played as slow as KL after 15 overs once the pitch started geting difficult. SKY who came in the slog overs scored at SR of 65, jadejas SR was 40. I cant believe am even debating this

Next 2 ICC events will be in RSA and Aus. Much much tougher for a technically limited batter like him. tapandrun 1
Gollum Posted June 13 Posted June 13 KL oozes with talent (test class technique, all the shots in the book, gifted timer) but mentally weak. Iyer mentally strong but very limited. Both incomplete players. tapandrun 1

Same can't be said about S Iyer. Iyer played very well yarr.. bracewell and Santa were turning the ball a great deal & were tightening the screws and Iyer played a clutch knock. He could have snatched Golden bat award from Ravindra if not for rush of blood. Edited June 13 by Lone Wolf Gollum 1

Iyer literally scored a crucial 48 in that match and had a partnership with Axar when India suddenly lost 3 quick wickets and pressure was mounting. He did not. He scored 48 at a low SR of 75. That is not match winning, when the req rate was mounting & had already become 7. When he got out, the req rate was still above 7. (Match fasaa hua tha). It was KL's knock of 35 at a SR of > 100 which ensured our victory. Edited June 13 by Frustrated Norman 1

MOTM against NZ in group game, recovery from 30/3 and mental scars of 0-3. Also a 50 against Pooks IIRC, he and Kohli had another partnership there which shut the door on Pooks. Iyer scored his runs on two paced Dubai tracks. Rachin played most of his games on the flat beds of Lahore/Pindi where 350 was par. Edited June 13 by Gollum Norman and Lone Wolf 2
putrevus Posted June 13 Posted June 13 (edited) If Iyer is clutch by scoring some runs in CT, Rahul remained not out in both semi final and finals finishing both matches which Iyer failed to close. 2023 semfinal also he remained not out by scoring 39. So Rahul is not clutch but Iyer magically is clutch. He also remained not out in finals where Mr Iyer could not last more than few deliveries. Edited June 13 by putrevus jusarrived and Frustrated 2

Pitches are more or less flat with true bounce in most places these days and i don't think Iyer will face any issues. Tests is a different matter though..

NZ spinners were all over us at that time, Iyer was the one who steadied the ship and played out their quota. Scorecard doesn't tell the full picture. Because NZ got 3 quick wickets and ball was turning square, I was expecting a 1996 SF type collapse at that point, that Bracewell guy was turning the ball like peak Murali. In that match, Rohit played the best knock, second was Iyer, then Axar, then KL. In SF, it was Kohli>Shreyas>KL Norman 1

putrevus Posted June 13 Posted June 13 It is moronic to call Iyers' knocks clutch and match winning in any of the CT matches. This bozo kept throwing his wicket away after getting set leaving others exposed . Frustrated 1

He came in when NZ spinners were beginning to turn the game around 180° and the ball was turning a mile. We desperately needed a partnership to stem the collapse. Rohit had ensured that required run rate wasn't going to be the issue for us at all in that game. 7 RR is absolutely nothing lol. It's like 36 off 30 required with still batting to come. Yes KL did well to close that match off , but that doesn't mean Iyer's knock wasn't important. Gollum 1

T20 WC in Australia games in Perth MCG were not at all flat. Slower balls don't work in Adelaide Conditions always have a role to play. NZ have open grounds like Hamilton and Hagley which aren't that high scoring either and ball moves a lot in night time. SA will be hosting an ICC event after 2 decades and pitches could be spicy as well in some venues. tapandrun 1

I don't think he has it in him to do well in RSA, Aus. But doesn't take away his achievements. Dude fired in 3/4 KOs in 23 WC and 25 CT. Also was instrumental in beating our nemesis NZ multiple times, his knock in CT group stage deserves more plaudits because of the mental block we had against them, that tournament was after the home test whitewash. KL has flopped too much to make up for all his stinkers. His 50 SR batting in 21 and 22 WCs was unpardonable. Flopped in 19 SF, Nov 19. Phattu attitude, he is actually 10x more talented than Iyer but a mental midget. Honestly, i dont want to defend KL I completely agree his approach when he opened for India in the past was painful to watch but as a middle order bat hes not put a foot wrong in last 4-5 years. The WC final is the only one people question, but I completly disagree that he was responsible for the loss. As for Iyer, i have never rated him he has surprised me on ocassions, but hes a good fringe player at best imo . He deserves his place today based on his current form but I dont see a point backing a 31 year old who has a limited upside from here. Him being a T20 captain is an even bigger joke. Frustrated 1

All 3 are true at the same time. Iyer has PR or some powerful lobby behind him, his T20 captaincy elevation is unjustified. He will probably find it difficult in RSA, Aus. So selectors should have an open mind. He was damn good in CT 25, big reason why we won, and deserved to be POTT. And his 23 SF 100 was an epic knock. Not every day you see someone score a 60 ball 100 against a top team in a WC SF. 340-350 was chaseable that day, it was Iyer who put the total beyond their reach. Edited June 13 by Gollum

It was a typical dry dubai pitch, assisting spinners a little. But none of Bracewell's delivery was turning square (like murali). Ye mujhe exaggeration lag raha hai. (IMHO) Besides, my point is- when Iyer got out, it was still anybody's game. (50-50) We needed 77 from 66 balls. It's not as if Iyer left Ind in a winning position or something close.
