ODI batsmen and age related decline

This is the first cricinfo page of the list of leading run scorers in ODI cricket.  

 

There are 63 batsmen on this page. Most retired before the age of 38 and were in decline for at least a  couple of years before that. 

 

The only batsmen who pushed close to or slightly past that age while still delivering peak performances were SRT, Sanga, Jaya, Dilshan.

 

Before RoKo, Dilshan was the one who pushed it to the max. He was 38 years and 5 months old before his batting started declining terminally especially against stronger opposition. 

 

Rohit's batting output seems to have declined in this calendar year. But until then, he had maintained his output until the age of 38 years and 9 months which was extremely impressive. 

 

But it's clear that even the extreme outliers of ODI batsmen fade away between the ages of 38 and 39.

 

Something Agarkar and GG to think about very carefully even if they want to go ahead with Kohli.

Another overlooked fact with aged players is their fielding. They are slow, drop catches and can cost a game or two with their poor fielding alone. Of late even youngsters have become butter fingered, so strong fielding skills must be made a minimum requirement for picking any player regardless of age.

Kohli is a bit different because his issues are not fitness-related and his batting is not reflex-dependent. His technical flaws and fishing expeditions mostly manifest in tests, but not all that much in ODIs. Plus, he is still a decent outfielder. The team could use someone with his grit.

SRT was a technical prodigy. All of his sixes from the late 90s were technically sound lofted shots with no brute strength like Jayasuriya or Afridi, and he could still hit Wasim Akram's inswinging short of length deliveries for fours with backfoot drives after tennis elbow injury.

 

He would have still managed to score runs in ODIs if he had played till 45 based on his technique only.

Kohli has scored most runs since CT finals  and he did not feast against Afghanistan like his captain Gill.He still in the best batsman on the team as of today.

 

GOAT is better odi  batsman than everyone on that list, no one even comes close to him.So there is no reason why his performance will drop. Nov 2027 is long way if his form falters, he will make way just like an injured player.

 

He does not have prove his worth every match.

 

Let guys like Gill and Iyer do something when it matters first before we talk about replacing the GOAT.
