Having backfoot shots is a blessing for an Indian batter Essentially an unrpoven player across conditions at any level. With the amount of specialist batsmen that we produce this guy is not the answer. Even Rajat Patidar was picked based on his A game performance India A vs English lions. THey played 3 unofficial tetss. Sai sudarshan 2 matches 221 runs 55.25 average Sarfraz khan 2 matches 220 runs 73.33 average Padikkal 2 matches 191 runs 63.66 average Patidar 1 match 155 runs 77.50 average KS Bharat 1 match 131 runs 131.00 average Sharans jain 1 match 127 runs 63.50 average Then there was this tour match where patidar made 111 runs.Sarfraz 96, Bharat 64 Jurel 50. Sarfraz has done well in almost all the games if we purely go by A games too. So is Sai sudarshan. As i said Rinku has done much better for his state. He is only 3 years older than Jurel. With plethora of batsmen reeling out so many runs it is unfair to prefer Jurel over them. I don't even want Sai sudarshan even though he is piling up runs for India A as he is not a finished material. Sundar has a much higher ceiling as a batsman than Jurel. This "eye test" selection can be massive hit or miss. Gotta go with guys who can score 150s, 200s as India's tail in all likelihood going to be longer. He probably might become better in the future. RIght now he is neither sangakkara nor baz. probably at the same level kushagara. Texan and lemsip 2

He isn't unproven across conditions if he can score in Australia, England and SL + India with all those shadow A tours. Isn't allowed to play much Ranji Trophy to boost his stats coz he is with test team during the season. Will also play and lead India A vs NZ in NZ in September Edited August 17 by Lone Wolf express bowling 1

The way he shielded lower order and score runs was the factor where we won the game. Either you go by A tour or First class. There are better players than him in each category. From his own state Rinku is a better specialist batsman who is only 28. In A tours many have done well. Even Karun nair made a double century in England on A tour. Sarfraz played one A tour game in England. Made 92. So i am not sure where exactly Jurel stands out.He makes a 50 here and there somtehing all keepers in the world do. He gotta score a lot of three figures to stake claim above all the players. He has 1 century in 16 games 1 50 in 16 games. He is yet to make a 100 as a specialist batsman. As a specialist batsman his score reads 13, 1, 14, 13, 0, 2, 19, 51. Do you really think he has potential based on these numbers? It is not necessarily sarfraz. There are atleast a dozen player who can put out better numbers than these.

Indian FC is lowest standard and I'd rather pick someone like Angkrish Raghuvanshi over a R Smaran. Just because one looks compact and technically adept to face pace and spin.. the other doesn't. What's the other option? Pick both of them for shadow A tour of a SENA country and you will get your answer there and then. Edited August 17 by Lone Wolf express bowling 1

That is an Indian pitch where a lot of domestic players do well. When he was up against experienced Harmer he coudn't do the same. Besides he was a keeper. Not a specialist batsman.

Then there is vaibhav. Jurel doesn't belong to that category. HE is a journeyman like BJ Watling, Nayan Mongia category. He will make runs like most keepers do. But he cannot be doing the same asa specialist batsman.
vvvslaxman Posted August 17 Posted August 17 As a speciliast bat he has to bat at no.6. Since 2010 no.6 batsmen contribution to India in Tests (min 5 innings). He is okay to be batting as a no.6 batsman if he plays as a specialist keeper. Not as a specialist batsman. With Pant beign a better keeper against pace , Jurel cannot pip Pant unless he is injured. Also Pant the keeper is way better than pant the fielder.

Jurel nailed two pulls yesterday vs Kumara and effortlessly bisected square leg and fine leg with such precision it shocked Bhogle and Roshan. One thing he has in abundance is his backfoot play. It's the front foot where he has some weakness vs pace outside off. But that's the case with 99% batters.
vvvslaxman Posted August 17 Posted August 17 Sundar and Jurel have played 7 matches together Sundar 7 matches 10 innings 297 runs 37.12 average Jurel 7 matches 12 innings 288 runs 26.18 average Sundar is not a specialist batsman.

Pacers don't get much here.
vvvslaxman Posted August 17 Posted August 17 I understand he has some compact attributes. But we are taking this "eye test" to whole new crazy level. Proof is in the pudding. Eye test won't give you runs. Gill was supremely talented and so easy on the eye. But he was brutally exposed in challenging surfaces for a long time until he went back and fixed his issues. He has 10 times better higher ceiling than Jurel. SO are promising youngsters. If guys like Abigyan kundu unlock his potential he will leave jurel to dust.

vvvslaxman Posted August 17 Posted August 17 Not even Pant was played as a specialist batsman. Pant made 114 at oval as a 20 year old. THen made 159* at SCG as a 21 year old. Both as keepers. INdia never tried to use him as a specialist bat and play saha as keeper. When saha came in Pant was dropped because they rated saha as a better keeper.
vvvslaxman Posted August 17 Posted August 17 Watch this kid at this age level. He has over 28000 runs at school level with 97 centuries. some of them massive. If he translates his potential into success he will be something. Also played a lot of clutch innings in both formats. Even iN Tests he played some clutch knocks in Australia. Jurel never set the stage on fire at any level. India is known for freakish batting talents. We shouldn't go for workman like players and set our expectations higher.

This "eye test" has taken a different form altogether these days. If these eye tests were the criteria that selectors all over the World used, then Steven Smith, the current generation's best Test batsman, would not have been selected in the team at all Lol. What matters at the end of the day are results. cricspirit 1
Adamant Posted August 18 Posted August 18 If you want to play him, let him bat at 3. Otherwise just pick Sarfaraz Khan. Lord and singhvivek141 2
