Why is Dhruv Jurel playing as a pure batsman in our test team?

I was surprised to see that Jurel averages 55 in first-class cricket. If you subtract the 10 Test matches from his 36 first-class matches, his domestic average becomes 64 and equal to Sarfaraz's average. But to Sarfaraz's credit, he has maintained that average in twice as many matches.

Coz Jurel was fast tracked as selectors saw his potential.  His FC average has jumped in recent past coz of his stellar performances for India A in Australia, SL, Eng and when Australia A visited India.  Now it's upto him to transform his promise into potential.

Sarfaraz's FC average saw a steep decline at India A level.

You're right. Jurel's numbers for India A are insane. He is the only batter breaking down the door at the India A level in recent years.

His Ranchi Test rescue acts in both innings are also evidence of his potential.

Jurel has talent but brainless just like jaiswal trying to hit every ball to boundary :whack:

There was a offspinner who scored 100 batting from number 9 in 2016-17 vs England.Karun Nair scoring 300 ,  what did they end up doing.

There are many one test wonders, it does not mean they are great. Most of these one test wonder have very decent FC avgs.

Jurel is a back up keeper  nothing more.

Gambhir started playing Jurel as batsman and kept Sarfaraz out.

We have three wicket keeper batsman in playing 11,ie Rahul,Pant and Jurel.

The other Gambhir template is playing half baked allrounders ie Reddy, Sundar, Harshit, etc

Rahul is not a proper keeper.    Reddy worked well in Australia and his debut in Perth was a stroke of genius.

Sundar in Oval and Harshit had his moments in Perth.

Where GG failed was not kicking seniors out before BGT series and that had follow on effect on Indian test cricket.

Rohit over bowling Bumrah that led to his injury in SCG is already well known and we are still paying for that blunder till this day.

There were no seniors in the home series against South Africa, and we still got smashed by 400 runs in Guwahati.
Just look at the batting line up that played there.

Jurel at 4
Jadeja at 6
Reddy at 7
Sundar at 8

This is GG's masterstroke!

This series was the first time these guys got a full series.  Add to that once you lose toss in India on a rank turners its game over.

That 0-3 vs NZ was far more embarrassing.  SA at least had pedigree seam and spin attack and were WTC champs.

That same NZ side got thumped 2-1 by Eng a month later in NZ itself

Since his debut home series, Jurel has had a lot of chances in tests both home and abroad and has never come close to justifying his inclusion as a batter/keeper/whatever. Unfortunately this lack of role clarity is a legacy of the Gambhir approach which the Indian think tank seems determined to keep doubling down on.

Should be given this full series to take a call on him. If he comes off he will solve a lot of issues for us even in abroad for a long time.

Has only played 1 inns in Perth test where everyone failed.  Never got to bat in second inns.

Played in Oval Test... Crucial cameo of 30 odd at that moment as a keeper bat.

Hasn't got a consistent run to cement his spot.  This series should be the one where one should take the call.

That is fair as long as the same yardstick is applied to all players. Sarfaraz was dumped suddenly and for good despite performing well, and certainly no worse than the others,  for the beginning stages of his career.

Sarfaraz, from whatever I've heard, repeatedly refused to bat in the Top 4 for Mumbai and prefered to statpad while batting at #5. That's probably why he never got many chances even for the A team.

That's why even Shaik Rasheed has pipped him in selection.  Bats at #3 for Andhra and is deemed to have a decent technique.

Rasheed should have been selected for this tour.  He is the incumbent anyways and a younger prospect to groom

Idk on what basis Sarfaraz was selected?  Hasn't done well at India A level and had a middling Ranji Trophy as well.

Same Social Media pressure got Aquib Nabi selected as well.
