Ram Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Pongal is a good time to be in Chennai... I dont know how it happens in the North, but down south, we've quite extensive celebrations.. But above all, its a day to fill yourself with a pot-belly full of Pongal, put your feet up and watch new films and debates ( what we call 'Patti Manrams') on Sun T.V. :D Its probably the second most celebrated festival after Diwali...
coffee_rules Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Happy Sugarcane eating! In Karnataka, people exchange 'Til mixture' (roasted sesame mixed with jaggery, dried chick peas, groundnuts, sugar candies etc' and also sugar structures (hot sugar syrup dried up in wooden moulds like Temples, idols of god etc.). All these sweet, and card dishes mixed with a leisurly lifestyle (no sports, physical activity), No wonder 90% of India is diabetic.
flamy Posted January 13, 2009 Author Posted January 13, 2009 I think the Gujjus have kite-flying around this time?

ludhianvi Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Happy Bhogi, Sankranti, Pongal, Lohri, Shangraand to all :two_thumbs_up: I think the Gujjus have kite-flying around this time? Basant is the time for kite-flying I think...Speaking of kites, I recall this incident we made a dor (string) out of thin metallic wire...LOL. And we were cutting other people's kites and they had no clue what was going on.. after you cut another person's kite...we used to yell this phrase...'I BOW' .......... LMAO....:hysterical: Actually, I used to get cut fingers because of the sharp dor ( kite strings)..The store keepers used to sell these finger slip-ons to prevent this.

ludhianvi Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 i think bhogi is the 1st day of sankranti.i have not heard anybody say " happy bhogi"-except flamy. ok what is sankranti? I am assuming it is the same as Shangraand, probably depends on the language. I know that Shangraand marks the start of a new month. Poh (bhogi) has finished and the month of Magh starts
