Comes from the Indus river (taught in school, I remember). It's what the Europeans called us when they were frantically looking for waterway into India. But our real and original name is Bharat. Comes from the name of King Bharat who rules most of India at one time. But the Sanskrit word Bharat actually means the Universe (AFAIK).

Herodotus though is credited by many to 1st used the word INdia in 4th century BC...... India is also said to be derived from latin word Lindia(meaning beyond Indus)

Its named after the Sindhu river which in Avestan/Persian drops the 's' and sounds like Indhu. The East India Company took that name when they consolidated their hold on the entire region.
