Teams have scored more runs in their fourth innings in the past but they never resulted in a victory. England had scored 654 for five while chasing 696 to win against South Africa in Durban way back in 1938-39. The match was drawn after 10 days. Maharashtra had scored 604 in their second innings while chasing an impossible 959 to win against the then Bombay in 1948-49 in Poona, now Pune. Everything depended on Yusuf when West resumed at 379 for six and he did not disappoint his team and fans as he stood their like a rock till the job was done. Resuming at the individual score of 84 along with other overnight partner Pinal Shah, Yusuf cashed in on the three dropped chance and made South Zone bowlers pay heavily. Soon after completing his century he was dropped by C. Ganapthy off his own bowling when the batsman was on 102 and then K.B. Pawan grassed a sitter off Aushik Sriniwas when the Baroda marauder was on 125. Ganapthy produced another chance when Yusuf was on 170 and this time the offender was Muralidharen Gautam. His stroke selection was near-perfect. The value of his innings was highlighted by the fact that he developed cramps when on 126 and was initially refused a runner by the field umpires. They relented only after a couple of overs to give much-needed relief to the struggling batsman. That Yusuf, when hampered by cramps and unable to use his feet comfortably, had the audacity to swing off-spinner Rohan Prem for a four and a six was a tribute to his big-hitting capability. When on 189, he hit Prem for a straight six and followed it up with another over over mid-on to reach his double century. Quite fittingly, it was a huge six by Yusuf off Aravind which scripted a grand finish.

The "________ was missing, therefore we are handicapped" excuse is tired and pathetic. For what it's worth, West Zone played this without five first-choice batsmen missing Rahane, Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Abhishek Nayar and Parthiv Patel, all of whom would have been picked in this squad (and who featured in the previous Duleep games) but for the BP XI game. Neither side had a first choice XI, but given constraints and other pressures, West Zone was the superior team and Yusuf played a massive role with his hundred and double in ensuring that. Give him some credit instead of reaching for straws and flimsy pathetic excuses.
