The book is a collection of photographs clicked by Kumble during his playing days. Wide Angle was launched by Kumble and Australian spin legend Shane Warne on Wednesday. Referring to Kumble as a gentleman, Warne said, "He is a rare combination of a gentleman and a fierce competitor and one of the jewels of the sport." Wide Angle contains personal experiences of one of the toughest men to have graced the game, his unique take on men and matters subtly woven around stories in the dressing room, stories on tour and the sheer joy of capturing moments in history. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quite a good timing for this media event during IPL! Anyway, I will be interested in browsing this book over a cup of coffee! A Gentleman and a fierce fighter - rare combination. He was always seen with a SLR camera with a huge lens in the pavilion during his playing days.

Though Kumble has retired from international cricket, he is the captain of the IPL team Bangalore Royal Challengers. However, a source in the BJP said that caste politics was the reason Kumble could not contest last year. H N Ananthkumar, a Brahmin, was running from the neighbouring Bangalore South and Kumble could not be fielded, as he is also from the same caste. "The problem persists even now," said a senior BJP leader. "It is very difficult to accommodate him in Bangalore city, as we already have a Brahmin MP and a couple of MLAs from the community. But, we are considering his case and I hope we will derive some formula to tackle this issue." The coffee table book Wide Angle, a pictorial tale of Kumble's memoir of 'off-the-field' cricket photography, has rare moments of Indian cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar celebrating after reaching his 35th Test century in Delhi. There is a section dedicated to wildlife as well. Sachin Tendulkar has written the foreword to the book that brings together Kumble's passion for cricket, photography and wildlife. It gives a glimpse into the lives of his contemporaries beyond the boundary. However, K S Eshwarappa, state president of BJP, has no ambiguity when it comes to Kumble's candidature. "We must not take the caste factor into consideration when we are talking about icons like Kumble. He belongs to the sports fraternity and I am happy to have him as our candidate, but we have a lot of time before we start thinking of the next parliamentary polls." Kumble is on the same page on the timing of his foray into politics. "I will come to active politics that is for sure, but let me play IPL for now," he added. He said he was pro-active as the chief of the wildlife board and he had formulated some game-changing policies that he would reveal shortly, though he was not attending the government office at Visweswaraya Towers regularly. Good news I say, have had enough of: a) Chewtiya politicians that sit in Parliament. b) Chewtiya citizens that dos nothing but keep complaining and moaning about the system, and elects the same chewtiyas. Good to see Kumble trying to make a difference. Me thinks he will actually make a brilliant statesman. Can you imagine him lead an Indian delegation? The man will cover us with dignity and honour. Kumble, who has been clicking pictures since the age of 15 when he was introduced to photography by his brother Dinesh, said, "Photgraphy which has always been a stress buster for me, has now become a passion after cricket" during the launch of his book Wide Angle here. The book on cricket, photography and wildlife, a compilation of images and impressions from the world of cricket and nature which captures defining moments on the pitch and behind the lens," is the culmination of a journey", Kumble, Captain of the Royal Challengers of Bangalore (RCB) team in the IPL, said. "Cricket is such a passion in India. But unfortunately what cricketers don't do is spoken about more than what they do. The book captures unique, personal, emotional moments behind the scenes like achievements, celebrations of birthdays with cake on the face which needs to be seen", he said. Turning nostalgic, Kumble relived the interesting moments spent with teammates like Venkatapathy Raju, Javagal Srinath and Harbhajan Singh, called "Bhajji", whom he descibed as the "funniest guy, a livewire in the dressing room". Unveiling the book, another spin great Shane Warne, who heads the Rajasthan Royals IPL team, described the book as "wonderful", and said it was "an honour to be Anil's friend". "When someone has skill there are different ways to skin a cat. But it is not just the statistics, it is the soul in his heart. He (Kumble) is a giver and that is what is important. There is hundred per cent commitment hundred per cent of the time", said Warne. "India is very lucky to have a person like him. He is an example for the young. Cricket is a wonderful game. But it took me a long time to understand Indians' passion for cricket just as it took me sometime to get used to the spicy Indian food", he quipped. "Over a period of time, it is not just the skill, but the passion and the commitment that matters", Warne said. Director RCB Sports Limited Siddarth Mallya, describing Kumble as "one of the finest cricketers" said "his (Kumble's) eye for detail is a game change in any situation whether on field or off it". To a question on the title of the book, Kumble said it gave a broad perspective and one tends to get the whole ambience of the situation. He described the picture of a lightning taken from the 17th floor of a hotel room in Durban in the wee hours as one of his favourites besides the one that captures master batsman Sachin Tendulkar scoring his 35th Test hundred. On what struck him about Warne, Kumble said, "Shane has always been an inspiration. I wish I could bowl like him or spin a ball like him. He is always finding ways and means to set up the batsman". "Though the job of the bowler is hard, but I can still change the course of the game as bowler", chuckled Shane.
