There are 3 books which I read and has stated few common actors in all 3 and one of them is Pacino. The Lee Stasberg notes and Intent to Live. You will get the idea why on earth is this guy so darn "perfect". Place these movies Godfather II, Scarface, Seprico & Dog Day Afternoon, Scent of a Women and Justice for All, place them on a table and give me one good reason on why De Niro is more versatile than he is? De Niro, as every knows, has his own style and you can't call a guy with his own unique style as versatile. There are 2 different actors, one who focuses on something specific and lets you know its him and the other whose got absolutely nothing and doesn't give you any chance to figure out who he is but makes you look deep into the character more. The former are De Niro, Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood, Downey JR, Robin Williams etc and the latter are Al Pacino, Brando, DiCaprio, D.Hoffman, Paul Newman, D.Washington, J.Lemmon, C.Waltz etc. That's a comparison but not on who is good and who is not. The latter is more focused on putting a certain effort into the character more than the 'role' the character plays, i.e., for eg: T.Montana in Scarface was a Cuban rebel, a rough guy, someone who wants to be a rich man and no matter what he has got to do for that, that's the character and his role is executing those traits of that character and Al Pacino studies and executes those roles as no one else, there are very, very, very rare number of actors who can play that role of Montana as good and fluidly as he did. In the current era, the actor who executes his role splendidly is DiCaprio, studies his character and that goes for Waltz too though he is got more experience with this German plays. Deniro's a legend but Al Pacino is is always a step ahead of him when it comes to versatility and nailing a character. Zelig beat me to it...I was going to say D.D.Lewis too,but going back to what I said about Pacino was in context to Coffee_rules post that Pacino is under-rated.....No one under-rates him,infact everyone agrees he is a legend. Going back to why I said he is over-rated was because I did see him over-act in a few films and this happens to most actors who are so good that they can sleepwalk through a film and still out-perform the entire cast.Kamal Hassan,Amitabh,Irfan Khan and even Paresh Rawal who are some of the best actors in India over-act in some movies or ham it up a lot but given their reputation we tend to over look it. Infact I have seen De-Niro overact in some movies too....Robin Williams hams in 90% of his movies except the ones he is really famous for....Clint East wood is a good director and a megastar but no one considers him "actor"...infact the guy just has 2 expressions. To me D.D.Lewis,is at the top of the list because they are so good that you forget the star behind the character and that is the mark of a great actor...Infact the guy is unrecognisable as his character.Meryl Streep is another example
coffee_rules Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 I say under-rated because not until scent of a woman, he was recognized by the academy, much later than other legends like JNicholson, MBrando, CEastwood, RDeNiro, etc. Whenever God-father is spoken about, Brando overshadows him in all references. In fact Pacino should get equal credits for "acting". When I saw his other 70s movies, realized what a great actor he is. RDN went to comedy as well, but he over-exposed his talent, he acts in all movies - Red Lights and some weired 50-cent movie, (what a joke of a movie). Sometimes too many movies is also too bad.

My brother in law thinks like that too. But lot of critics feel he also overacts. Every one does.. I think Jack Nicholson may be an exception :giggle: . Brando, Hoffman, Sean Penn all have their own claim to that accolade.

I genuinely feel he will end up as the top actor ever if he makes all the right choices (which he is already).

He is a real gem. One of the very few Indian actors who show little to no camera awareness when he acts. :hatsoff: I have never seen anybody say this to any actor. Acting is about playing a character. The basic criteria is to be not aware of the camera. Who is aware of it, let me know?

He is a stunning actor, very, very sharp one but look at the movies and the roles he has been given excluding Gangs of NY & There Will Be Blood, he is the very best at what he does. There isn't a lot of variety on it, the characters might differ but not the execution of that character. There are plenty of actors outside Hollywood who is better or equally as good as D.Lewis. I don't know why Amitabh's name is on that statements on the first place. Brilliant actor but 100s of better ones in India apart from him. Even I don't really think Pacino is really under rated nor over rated but easily one of the best. Brando or Strasberg actually came into the modern screen late in their career as he was more into theatrical roles but that's not the same with DeNiro or Pacino. That makes a difference sometimes, i.e, they came early into the screen and despite that they are just the meistr of acting. Point me out few parts of a movie where either of these two; DeNiro and Pacino 'over-acted'. Why so? Because he can't express emotions as most of the big shots? There are various type of 'actors' and 'acting' refer to the famous acting guide 'Audition' which explains every single corner of acting and the types of actors. Clint Eastwood or J.Cobburn are more of a macho or as the documentary of Inside Studios would say a 'cultural actors'.
