Irfan Pathan for T20

Another vote for Irfan. I think he offers good value as someone who can bat at 7 and also operate as the 3rd seamer. Having someone like him also balances the side well as we don't have to play 7 specialist batsmen and then depend up on part-timers to do the duties of 5th bowler and even more with one or two of the other bowlers likely to go for extra runs (not everyone can have a perfect day) The usefulness of the 7th batsman can also be analyzed. It would be interesting to see the 7th batsman's contribution. In the long history, I only remember handful of occassions where the 7th batsman made a winning contribution like Kaif when he got a 100 in SL (can't be sure if we won that game), that Natwest final and may be a few other occassions .... I won't be surprised to see that the batting average of 7th position is around 25. Which probably means that Ind can afford to play 'useful' cricketers like Irfan at 7 Earlier we had someone like Robin Singh who played that role well. He wasn't special but usually tended to contribute with either bat or ball, along with fielding. I haven't met too many folks who arent fans of Robin Singh! If Irfan is selected (and considering how his bowling has gone down), he would be useful in playing Robin's kind of role. Another contender is Nayar, if he can improve his bowling too

I think Irfan the way he stormed into Indian cricket, is held to different standards by both fans and selectors,

To get the zing back in his bowling, perhaps Irfan needs to some weight especially around the upper part of his body. He used to get the banana swing due to the twists in his body at the time of delivery. With a bulky frame , that is missing and hence the swing has completely gone from his armoury.

Do people realise that this Irfan actually struggles to get into the 120K's range? How will he take wickets bowling at spinners pace, he is like your typical trundler in county cricket but even slower. His batting is good but obviously he isnt going to get into the Indian team on batting with all the talent around.

Infact faster than Vinay kumar. We are only comparing him with group of trundlers not express quicks :winky:

Who are the number 7 spot candidates for India in ODIs : 1. Y Pathan 2. I Pathan 3. Jadeja 4. Uthappa 5. Nair Uthappa is a better batsman than Irfan, but does not bowl at all which will lead to 10 overs being filled in by part timers. Irfan can give around 4-6 overs on average. India should test out these two in the ODIs leading up to the World Cup at number 7 and settle on one, but both are not in India's squad to Zimbabwe or the India A team.

Him and Venkatesh Prasad can give each other a run for their money on setting the record of being the only bowler in the history of cricket with the unique ability of having a run up faster than the speed at which the ball is delivered.
Lol when Irfan has arrived at that time was bowling fast and ball was swinging ,muanf also in begiing bowling fast and now may be ishant can any one teel me what are happenig here, why is it so. Regards Abrahim

Irfan is a natural, still good value with the new ball and in right conditions- too many provisos there but sadly thats what it has come to. Shame really, sad case of what mught have been from that searing yorker on his debut series in Aus (was it to Gilly? Langer??) Even later under Guru Greg there was a period of a few months when he was in fantastic form with bat and ball, key component of an India team on fire for a while...often playing useful knocks at 3. From what I saw of him in the IPL he dosent seem to be able to maintain a good line and length when the ball is not swinging and at least keep batsmen quiet. As has been said before though, he is a good bat. He really should have gone on one of these tours or at least be allowed to go play for county. Its weird how even people who did not make an A team or a second string senior side like Irfan and Sree have not been allowed to play county cricket.

The last over that he bowled against CSK in the game where Dhoni hit a lot of runs to win is a good example of what you said

Never rated him' date=' Legend Agarkar on the other hand........what a magnificent human being.[/quote'] Sir Aggy... what a (joke) bowler :hehe: :hysterical:
He is around Anil Kumble pace' date=' maybe he should think about joining England are trying to get in the side for batting.[/quote'] Irfy can get in. Murali Karthik can't. [rant=on] I'd rather like to see Murali Karthik play for England and maybe win them a game against India, slam the selectors after collecting the Man of the Match award and teach the youngsters that there are options apart from India, where you are usually just as good as the money you're willing to bribe the selector with [/rant=off]

What i cannot tolerate is selection of useless pathan' date=' Jaddu ahead of Irfan for a T20 game. You really have to be out of your mind to do that. I would take him 10 times out of 10 ahead of these two clowns.[/quote'] Yep. Especially Jadeja, who's just an above average bowler, pathetic fielder, and batting, well let's not talk about it. Forget the bowlin aspect, he can be picked as a batting allrounder, and is way better than Yusuf pathan in batting. Got more temperament too. Anyday I'd pick pathan over Jadeja.

You still do not understand, Jadeja is a spinner and Pathan is not a replacement for me but rather Ojha, Mishra. IP, his batting is good but what is the use as I mentioned, he will come at the very end and slog just like Bhaji. And based on his batting, better to get a pure batsman and play 7-4 system. His bowling is not good and anyone who thinks he should lead our pace attack, needs a doctor. Imo, its better for a player to be good in one thing and make it a strength rather than just be at most decent in batting and bowling. Based on this, there can be many players like IP who are decent in both batting and bowling.

Jadeja is an allrounder, in theory anyway. Ojha and Mishra are frontline spin bowlers. So Im not sure Jadeja could come in for Mish or Ojha or vice versa- he can be economical but has nowhere near the kind of attcking nous that a wicket taking bowler needs. If we play 2 pacemen and two spinners, then Irfan can be a 3rd paceman. Im not sure if anyone is expecting him to LEAD the pace attack (though Id still say he can give us a few good overs with the new ball) , he seemed set to at one stage in his career. Kinda think thats beyond him sadly. Unfortunately (particularly for a 3rd seamer) he dosent have the accuracy youd want. He's too profligate with the run giving and that really goes against him. At his (lack of) pace any erring in line and length will get clubbed by Intl batsmen. Thats what he needs the opporunties to prove he can do. Also, there arent really many players who are decent in both bowling and batting- RJ and YKP certainly arent !

Sloggers don't make 100s in Tests, sloggers don't open in Tests on a 4th day pitch. India doesn't need Jadeja. We already have Yuvraj to do his job. Yusuf, Yuvraj, jaddu, Bhajji how many more darters you need. It is not like our opening bowlers are ambrose and walsh. Zak and Nehra barely can call themselves a decent bowling options in T20. You need 3 seamers. Irfan is a much better when it comes to clean hitting against both spin and pace. Tendulkar frequently uses him at no.3 spot. He is such a flexible option unlike Yusuf and Jaddu who have done more harm than good to India so far.
