The most overrated and underrated tons by GOD

Underrated: Chennai'08. Ton after the Mumbai attacks. He often gets criticized for not having scored a hundred in the fourth inns of a test match or chasing down a total in ODIs. His 108no in Chennai had shut his critics down. Viru of course had set the game for us, but without God and UV (to some extent), that match could have gone the other way. IMO that inns doesn't get talked about in the same breadth as his other tons like 241no, 136, etc. No hundred is fluke, but some tons are way too over hyped...not considering the quality of the opposition, pitch conditions, etc. P'vitharana's two tons in this series, for instance:hehe: Overrated: ODI 200no. His 200 was good, but I don think it was great. Plain euphoria!

I think the ODi 175 or whatever it was at Hyderabad vs the aussies a few months ago was better than the 200.

my favourite memory of that match is irfan pathan smacking the shiit out of oomar gul and inzamam crying after obstructing the pitch. good game, shame it couldn't be completed. india could have taken the series 0-5

Contribute to the damn thread' date=' oldies and n00bs:orderorder:[/quote'] If you're going to discount the 200* because.. of some arbitrary reasoning, your OP doesn't deserve a response. 20 years after his debut, he batted through the full 50 overs and fielded the full 50 overs in the sub-continent in February - I think that is reason enough to say that it was a hell of an innings. One, because no one's ever scored 200 in an ODI before; two, because the only one who got close had a runner for the majority of his innings, and he wasn't doing it after twenty years of grueling international traveling; three, because it was a ****ing awesome innings cricketing wise - some of the shots vs. Steyn were just out of the world. Where does it rank among his 47 international ODI centuries? Well, thats up to each individual but calling this an overrated hundred is nothing short of ignorance, and a lack of understanding of cricket.

No innings of Sach can ever be over-rated, but there are a few efforts that generally escape peoples’ memories. Here’s a few, in no specific order; His innings against Pakistan in the 1st final of the Independence cup against Pakistan in B’desh in 1997-98. (Yes, the independence cup of the Hrishikesh Kanitkar –last-ball-4 fame) rarely ever gets talked about. I think he made something like 60 off 40 balls and blitzed the Pakistani bowling while he was still there His 90 against England in the 2nd test of the 2007 summer (given lbw padding up to a delivery) doesn’t get anywhere near the mention it should. It was our first major test series since the WC ’07 debacle. We had barely managed draw the first test in Lords. Sachin came in at a tricky stage and had to endure a torrid spell from James Anderson (got hit on the grill even). He didn’t look pretty in that innings, but that innings is incredibly important in setting up our first test series win in England in more than 2 decades. This might seem odd, but if anyone wants to know how Sachin bats when he’s at his SUPREME best, his 85 against Australia in the 2nd test at the Eden Gardens in 98 series is probably the innings to watch. Azhar made a big 100 and got all the plaudits, but Sachin was literally making the Aussie bowlers weep while he was there and looked as though he could score 800 runs if he wanted to. Every shot of his came from the centre of the bat and raced to the boundary like a scud missile. The Australians could have had 20 fielders and it wouldn’t have mattered. I think he got out cutting uppishly at point (which is pretty odd for a test match, but shows how aggressively he was playing that day).To me, this innings was the ultimate pinnacle of batting perfection and the general yardstick that I use to measure how close or far away Sachin is, to his best.

Most people probably don’t even remember his effort against Pakistan in the 4th innings of the Delhi test in late 2007. We were chasing a smallish total for victory but Shoaib Akhtar ripped through our top order, leaving us reeling at 26-3 (remember that magic delivery that swung in late and bowled Dravid through bat and pad?). Sachin came in and literally stonewalled Shoaib and deflated their entire attack singlehandedly. He got out just before we reached our target but that innings was special because it was for the first time that Sachin would play a significant role in a successful 4th innings Indian batting effort.

It has now gotten swept under with the first hundred under the generic 'Desert Storm' description even though the level of the innings was a notch below the one played when he made us qualify for the finals.

i think its the opposite. 143 was a bit of a flukey innings with some mis-hits, shots going in the air landing clear. i guess thats what made it exhilarating to watch. 134 in the final was absolutely flawless. this was just him dominating the aussie bowling.

TBH pitches nowadays aren't upto Sachin's standards, he hardly looks like getting out. Sachin is finally cashing in on flat track era that made batting superstars out of nobodies.

Sorry for nitpicking, he scored 95 runs in 78 balls in that match. He absolutely smoked Pak bowlers and hit 5 big sixes (most of them were slog sweeps) before getting bowled around his legs by Afridi. The 44 ball 67 was in the previous league match in which Azhar scored a century. Great innings, both of 'em.
