Raina - not good at Short pitch bowling - probably need backup for Raina for South Africa tour

Raina has already played in the IPL in South Africa, Champion's League so he has plenty of experience in the conditions there. What's the point in questioning a young growing player before the series has even started? He's done the most of the chances he's been given.
I reckon the champions league wickets were made a bit more batter friendly. For the test matches I'm sure they'll prepare bouncy wickets knowing Indian batsmen don't like it there

Would not like theonly bundle of energy on the field to be left out of the test side. Deserves a long run based on the start he has got in test cricket. In any case even if he does fail in SA, that should not be held against him. Not too many of our batsmen have done well in SA on their first tour (Dravid may be an exception).

This is the problem with people who learned their cricket from text books. If they see someone with suspect technique, the automatic inference is ‘OMG, he wont succeed in faster, bouncier wickets… We need a replacement..::omg:’ Actually, there’s something else pretty minor that people forget to take into account – a BIG heart, which Raina has. Do the names Steve Waugh, Saurav Ganguly ring names? Waugh didn’t exactly look like he was getting a Chinese massage when he was facing all those rising deliveries from Ambrose. Ganguly looked so suspect against short-pitched bowling, it felt as though even the threat of it was enough to get him dismissed. But together, these two men have score nearly 15,000 runs in test cricket, far more than many many other batsmen who looked way more accomplished against quick bowling. Raina is no Rahul Dravid, but he has a heart the size of a football field and a will to fight for his team as strong titanium. Whether he looks good or bad out on the pitch, one thing you can guarantee – He’s going to put everything on the line for the team. I’ll take that kind of attitude 365 days a year over ‘technically superior’ batsmen.

Not too many of our batsmen have done well in SA on their first tour (Dravid may be an exception).[/quote'] Not just first tour, most of our top batsmen have struggled in SA conditions throughout their careers: Sachin - 12 Tests, average 39 Saurav - 8 Tests, average 36 Dravid - 8 Tests, average 33 VVS - 7 Tests, average 41 Azhar - 7 Tests, average 23 Sehwag - 5 Tests, average 26 Only VVS has done decently compared to his career average.

Did you guys see how Pup got out :cantstop: That made Raina's dismissal look good. Also look at how Punter was set up for a short ball and trapped. Truth is nobody is good against short ball consistently. The best batsman against short ball is the one who doesn't play at all. Even perfect pull or hook shots can lead to your dismissal when 2 men are posted at deep. Those days they didn't have those fielders

I think he'll get another series. He'll play SA and maybe a test even beyond. If he improves his short-bowling technique, he's a regular. If not, apart from many youngsters, there is a particular YUVRAJ SINGH who is more than handful.

I think Viv was pretty good against the short stuff. But I agree with you, playing the short ball, especially kicking up towards one's body is tough.

Mohinder Amarnath Sunny Gavaskar (when he used to do it, though not often??) Sandeep Patil (I think he used to hook and be brave against short pitch bowling?) Kapil Dev - the Nataraja hook and pull :thumbs_up: Would Colonel Dilip Vengsarkar do it against the short pitch bowling? In last decade or 15 years? VVS Laxman - the best Sometimes Sachin or Rahul anyone else quickly come to your mind? Were players of yesteryear India more comfortable with the hook-shot than modern day Indian players, or is it a change in field placement, batting strategy etc to "leave the short ball alone" esp since the number of short balls are limited in today's cricket rules?

That is one of the main reason. Nowadays you have 2 fielders. It is impossible to hit it along the ground. Ball will go up in the air. It is also difficult to place the ball as it largely depends on the angle, bounce, direction of the ball. Not even great Viv had 100% record with pull or hook. Among the Indians Dravid ducks better than the most. He also picks the right ball to pull.

There is no question that Raina looks clueless against short pitched deliveries. I can't believe this can't be coached. He is a must in our batting lineup and he needs to sort this out ASAP. May be the BCCI should hire Mohinder or Viv to conduct a short pitched batting clinic with Raina and co.

I agree. BCCI is useless, they wont take any novel steps like this. There needs to be clinic for all our youngsters, Kohli, Pujara, Raina, M.Vijay, KKD ...to coach them on facing short pitch bowling. Not some one off clinic. But a regular one so whoever among our next gen is on a break can go to it.

raina isnt the first test batsman to struggle against short pitched bowling. every batsman has a weakness....u can still be successful if u have the right attitude, if u have the talent and if u value your wicket. steve waugh is a good example of this, the guy sucked against short pitched bowling but was still a great player
