diegovegaz Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 ashwin >> bhajji in fact ashwin >> all others bowls well in powerplays, and pretty much a solution to our death bowling worries yuvraj and rohit/yusuf as other spinners
spectre Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Looks like CSK had you weeping for a longtime :giggle: nice to know that Corrected :fishing:
jf1gp_1 Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 bhaji is our primary spinner but then grass is always greener on the other side so its make perfect sense to drop our primary spinner and play a rookie who has make few contributions in t20 games and handful of ODI played against zim and depleted NZ that to directly in World cup

Ram Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 There are two self-evident truths within the Indian team; No.1; They love Bhajji. They love the attitude he brings on to the field, his aggression and feisty nature. While Dhoni+Kirsten are the strategic leaders and Sachin is the moral leader, Bhajji is the obvious emotional leader. He’s the one who isn’t afraid to confront people within the team and rub them in the wrong way if required. He’s the voice who encourages the players to not be intimidated by the opposition. They’re NEVER going to drop him, at least until he starts bowling sheer garbage, which hasn’t happened till now. No.2; They wont play 2 specialist spinners. It is obvious that MSD is just too spooked by the prospect of playing only 2 specialist seamers, because in his opinion, that is a code-red risk, especially in the power-play situations (even though, the numbers actually suggest the opposite). Plus, with Yuvraj bowling as well he is and Yusuf scoring that career-defining innings against NZ in the final ODI, that has obviously given them some breathing room, in terms of playing a balanced bowling attack. Yusuf will almost certainly play at no.7 come the WC and will share the 2nd spinner responsibilities with Yuvraj. And that’s a shame because Aswhin is a genuine strike force in ODIs. That guy has bonafide wicket taking talent in the initial/middle overs of an ODI and that sort of skill is EXACTLY what we need in conditions where the average score is expected to be upwards of 290+. A crucial wicket during the middle overs could be the difference between us chasing 330 and 290 in a world cup semi-final. But the team has chickened and opted for the safety first approach by playing 3 seamers, no matter how impotent they turn out to be. Aswhin could have been our version of Jayasuriya of ’96, or Klusener of ’99 or Tait of 2007. Unless there’s some sort of unexpected turnaround in the team’s thinking, it is very unlikely that he will play as the 2nd spinner. Sujan 1
cowboysfan Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I think they have to reconsider the "3 seamers a must" rule.none of our fast bowlers can bowl well in the Power play overs, are they honestly going to better than Ashwin in the PP overs?.I would try Ashwin in the early stages of the WC (alongside Bhajji).he can bowl in the 2nd powerplay and maybe finish off if the need arises.
singhprakash72 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I think Pragyan Ojha is a better bowler than both Bhajji & Ashwin ...although his batting inferior. But I would rather have a genuine good bowler in team than fill the team with Half A** players. Presently Indian bowling attack looks pretty ordinary except for Zak...none of bowlers would make it to any top international team. India's best chance is to use its batting strength and create pressure on team by putting good score.
Sujan Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Playing both is a safe bet I guess. One cannot say when Bhajji can do a wonder while bowling or batting + he adds a spcl thing into the team and Ashwin is a decent spinner, who seems very promising!

F-bsf2x-aeE Even Bhajji would faint hearing all this praise! :winky:
Mariyam Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Doesn't matter if Ashwin is better than Bhajji. It would take a lot of guts on the part of MSD and coach to drop Bhajji. Not happening. On a related note, why is Bhajji so good at tests and so poor ( recently) at ODIs.

urbestfriend Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I'd definitely go with both Bhajji and Ashwin or Bhajji and Yusuf in my lineup. We need two spinners who can bowl 20 middle overs guaranteed without giving away too many runs.
someone Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 The thing is both of them are not good. There are five spinners: Harbhajan, Ashwin,Jadeja,Ohja,Chawla. There is not a lot of difference between each of them. So probably luck will be a factor.

I agree with the pt re: Bhajji.. and that Ashwin can be a useful ODI cricketer. You can see though why they want 3 seamers, if one of the new ball bowlers has a bad day- as Nehra did the other day and gets smashed in his first 3 of 4 overs say. You want to take him off and bring on someone who can use the new ball. I think 3 seamers is important. I would not mind seeing Piyuh in the squad at least just to give the spin attack some variety- in Bhajj, Ash, Yusuf, Rohit, Raina theres a plethora of offie options and Yuvs SLA. A leggie would be nice. How about Ashwin and Piyush -would be two spinners who can work in tandem and are useful batsmen...not as good Bats as Yusuf or bowlers as Bhajj though...
Sooda Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Hm.. nonsense is a bit harsh, not great I guess though yeah... they can swing it around a bit in the last few overs not much more
Ram Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I agree with the pt re: Bhajji.. and that Ashwin can be a useful ODI cricketer. You want to take him off and bring on someone who can use the new ball. I think 3 seamers is important. [/quote'] At home, we don’t need our seamers to bowl more than 17-18 overs/match. Right now, they’re averaging about 24-25 overs match (all these are stats from our 3 previous home ODI series against South Africa, Australia and Lanka). You might be surprised to hear this, the ER of our seamers between overs 1-10 is actually lesser than their overall ER. But more pertinently, the ER of our seamers is a whopping 2 runs/over more than our spinners, between overs 11-40. If it is upto me to draw up the Indian team strategy, I would not have the seamers bowling a single ball between overs 11-40, of course, with certain exceptions included. Right now, the top three spin ODI bowlers in our country are Bhajji, Ashwin and Ojha. So I’d include them ahead of anyone else. (I think Jadeja is also a better ODI bowler than Piyush) But if let to me, I’d ask the curators to prepare spin-friendly tracks and load the team with 2, even 3 specialist spinners. The flatter the pitches are for the WC, the less likely we are to win it, because it evens out the playing field. Just look at the scorecard for the 5th ODI against NZ; http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-new-zealand-2010/engine/match/467887.html This is what we are capable of doing at home in spin friendly conditions.
