Crookbond Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Kerala: Husband, mother-in-law burn woman’s private parts in a bid to abort baby http://www.firstpost.com/india/kerala-husband-mother-in-law-burn-womans-private-parts-in-a-bid-to-abort-baby-649462.html Thiruvanthapuram: In a shocking incident, a pregnant woman near here was allegedly made to drink water mixed with chilly powder and her private parts burnt using fire logs and cigarette butts by her husband and mother-in-law after she refused to go in for an abortion as demanded by him. Police said Darshan (24) and his mother Vijaya (38) of Neyyattinakara near here had been persistently tormenting the 21-year-old woman ever since she became pregnant eight months ago. The woman told police that she did not inform her parents as they had opposed the marriage with Darshan, with whom she had fallen in love. Darshan and his mother allegedly made her drink water mixed with chilly powder, burnt her private parts with fire logs and cigarette ends. They had locked her in a room for the last two months, police said. Police said neighbours, who did not see her out for long, informed her mother who complained to police. Darshan and his mother were sent into custody on Monday and they have been remanded to judicial custody, police added.

beetle Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Kerala court releases elephant on bail THRISSUR: Thechikottukavu Ramachandran, reportedly the tallest domestic elephant in India, has secured another record. The elephant could perhaps be the first in the country to be charged with murder and released on bail. Ramachandran, which stands 3.17m tall and fondly called Raman, was released by the Perumbavoor first class judicial magistrate court last week in a case related to the death of three women after he ran amok at a temple festival in Perumbavoor on January 27. The Malayattoor forest division had filed the case against the elephant, temple and devaswom authorities. Thechikottukavu peramangalathu devaswom, which owns 45-year-old Ramachandran, had to submit a bond of Rs 30 lakh and surety of two persons to secure his bail. The elephant was in the custody of forest officials after the attack. As per rules, an elephant should not be included for any parade for 15 days after such attacks. The court had earlier declined a request from the devaswom authorities for his release to parade him at the Thechikottukavu festival on February 12 after forest officials produced a medical report, claiming Ramachandran is a problematic elephant and he should not be paraded for the next three months. It was at this juncture that the devaswom authorities moved the bail application. As per the Kerala Captive Elephant Maintenance and Management Rules, an elephant that creates a problem is released by submitting an affidavit on a Rs 50 stamp paper, which will contain all details of the animal. But the forest officials were adamant in Ramachandran's case. Devaswom president Vasudevan Kurumboor said they had not sought Ramachandran's release for any festival. Malayattoor divisional forest officer B N Nagaraj said veterinary officials would examine the elephant again after three months and the court would take a decision based on the medical report. The elephant was brought to Kerala from Bihar by A N Ramachandran, a bank employee in Thrissur and Thechikottukavu devaswom bought him in 1984. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Kerala-court-releases-elephant-on-bail/articleshow/18920005.cms

Crookbond Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Old but gold! Somalia’s Islamist group bans samosas, calling it 'too Western' http://www.indianexpress.com/news/somalia-s-islamist-group-bans-samosas-calling-it-too-western/823140 Somalia's extremist Islam fighters have banned samosas after ruling that the popular snacks are too 'Western'. The Al-Shabaab group last week used vehicles mounted with loudspeakers to announce the bizarre ruling across regions of the war-torn country it controls. The extremist group has offered no official explanation for the ban on the snack, the Daily Mail reports. The samosa is said to have upset militant Islamists due to a supposed resemblance to the Christian Holy Trinity, the paper said. The bizarre ban comes just days after militants linked to Al-Qaeda in Somalia refused to let some aid workers into the country, as tens of thousands suffered in the nation''s massive famine. The unexpected move means Somalis would now be punished if caught cooking, buying or eating samosas, known locally as 'sambusas'. The UN last week declared a famine in two parts of the country and warned of millions facing death from starvation. The Al-Shabaab had previously suggested it would allow foreign agencies to bring in vital food aid to prevent its people from dying. But the group has now denied the existence of famine and accused Western governments of inventing the crisis as a propaganda tool.
