I generally don't empathize with a movie character if its very apparent that he/she is going to change for the better (improve/ get rich/ get his or her love interested etc) in the end of the movie. Its some kind of sub conscious rationalization. I am saddened by scenes where in a character is wronged and he/she has no chance for betterment in the movie.

For me (and a few others) it was that Maa song. I didnt cry as such, but it was a lump-in-the-throat-maker

We know but we never think consciously about it. If you think about it , parenthood is full time job with basically no material returns. Its amazing how much parents love their kids and yes like all oldies say " People wont know till they have their own kids " As for the movie, I think people who felt pressure and were under stress during school days would find the movie very touching , just like 3 idiots. It can happen because of parents having high expectations or kids doing it to themselves. I have met many kids from middle class families in India who are studying all the time and are focussed only on making big so their parents dont have to "think" about money anymore. The pressure to make it big , become rich , successful and own a large car puts too much pressure on a teenager.

How can you expect people to apply limited logic in terms of the character's future and yet ignore the fact that its a movie after all ? Those that cry while watching a movie are very much in the moment devoid of rationale.

rahulrulezz Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Waqt kinda made me emotional. I love my dad and even the thought of something happening to him scares me. I have to say Akshay and Big B did an excellent role(other than that Akshays tandav dance near the end)

I don't think crying merely can reduced to an expression of sadness or happiness or as some "sub conscious" rationalization as you put it.. It can just overwhelming feeling that cinema can always bring out through images and sound. It can be one person's experiences and how he relates to what is on screen. It is not a cause and effect equation. It is organic and at most times individuals cry for reasons they can't or don't need to pin down.
